Job Summary:A certified healthcare provider employed by Erlanger Health is responsible for direct and/or indirect care of patients under the direction of an RN, LPN, physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. The medical assistant assists in the delivery of health care for patients per their scope of practice, in the ambulatory areas of Erlanger. This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State guidelines and are trained and assigned to manage the practices patient population. Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.Education:Required: High School diploma/equivalentCompletion of an accredited or governed program OR military equivalent training OR one year of clinical medical assistant experience within the last 5 years.Preferred:Experience:Required: Preferred:Previous MA experiencePhlebotomy SkillsPosition Requirement(s): License/Certification/RegistrationRequired:BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and to be maintained going forward. Clinical Medical Assistant CertificationPreferred:For Medical Assistants who work in areas with DNV Advanced Specific Disease Certification requirements:-Ortho: 4 hours education annually-Stroke: 1 hours education annually -Spine: 2 hours education annually Department Position Summary:The employee must be able to:Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in physician practice.Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.Provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include:o Checking schedules and organizing patient flowo Accompanying patients to exam/procedure roomo Assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting patient historyo Performing screenings per provider guidelineo Assisting providers/nurses with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls and providing pertinent information.Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include:o Sending/receiving patient medical recordso Obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.o Completing forms/requisitions as neededo Scheduling appointmentso Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographicso Managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.o Reviewing in basket messagesFulfill environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include:o Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocolso Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.o Running quality controls on equipment as required and documenting/record keeping.o Maintaining logs:RefrigeratorSample logQuality control logso Ordering, sorting, stocking supplieso Restocking exam/procedure rooms as neededFulfill organizational responsibilities as assigned including:o Respecting/promoting patient rightso Responding appropriately to emergency codeso Sharing problems relating to patient and/or staff with immediate supervisor Fulfill medical assisting responsibilities according to State guidelines/regulations which may include:o Aseptic techniqueo Sterilizationo Instrument wrapping/autoclavingo Vital signso Preparation for physical examo Clinical pharmacologyo Drug administrationPOInjectiono Prescription verification with physician ordero Minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-upo Pre/post-surgical careo Applying dressings/suture removalo Biohazard waste disposal/monitoringo Therapeutic modalitieso Instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, home careo Laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelineso Quality control methodso CLIA waived testingo Capillary punctures/venipunctureso Specimen handling- urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputumo Electrocardiography
