Note: this position will receive a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase of 6.55% which is not reflected in the salary listed in this posting. The effective date of the increase is January 1, 2025 for February 1, 2025 paychecks.

What we are looking for:
Ability to make daily decisions that determine how a variety of cultural practices are to be applied to individual trees and orchard blocks.
Ability to review pertinent information and decide what should be proposed as the most appropriate course of action.
Ability to assist in conducting field monitoring to track the progress of orchards and detect conditions requiring immediate or future treatment.
Ability to monitor various conditions such as soil & nutrient status, tree vigor, graft healing, crown development, reproductive flowering, cone & seed development, and infestation of insects, diseases, weeds, and rodents.
Oregon Public Applicator's License with herbicide, rodenticide, and other relevant categories shall be obtained within six months of hire, if not already certified. License certification shall be maintained throughout duration of employment. License/Certification and continuing education credits shall be paid for by the Schroeder Seed Orchard.
Training to operate fork-lift, high-lift, and other orchard equipment shall be obtained within six months of hire in order to carry out the duties of this position. This training shall be conducted on-site.
Minimum Qualifications
Eighteen months of experience working in the field of forestry, forest recreation, fire protection, farming or a closely related natural resource field
OR
Associate Degree in Forestry, Forest Engineering, Forest Recreation, Fire Protection, farming or a related natural resource field of study
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Note: Driver's License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver's license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.
Desired Skills:
As the Forest Technician at the J. E. Schroeder Seed Orchard, you will assist the Orchard Operations Specialist in the completion of annual orchard work. Duties include:
* Make suggestions for improving practices related to managing orchards, producing seed crops, and processing seed.
* Assist with all orchard operations as directed by the Orchard Manager or the Orchard Operations Specialist.
* Acquire expertise and stay abreast of new developments and research related to growing orchards, producing seed crops, and breeding trees.
* Apply knowledge and skills by providing management recommendations, performing hands-on work, and overseeing the performance of contractors.
* Monitor development of cone crops and maintain field notes for future analysis of crop yield.
* Alert Orchard Manager to damaging agents such as adverse weather and insects so that preventive action can be taken.
* Work with the Orchard Manager to estimate the annual crop yield through statistical sampling to provide accurate information for budgeting and harvest planning.
