Job DescriptionAcademic Outreach Specialist (Program Specialist I)This position will work in collaboration with DSHS staff and academic partners on programs and initiatives related to the public health workforce and public health practice. This position will participate in recruitment efforts, including representing DSHS at university partner events such as carrier fairs and speaking to student groups and classes about public health careers. This position will also support different workforce development initiatives and help create content to support early career public health opportunities. This position is grant funded through July 31, 2026. This person will need to live in the Houston area.
Essential Job FunctionsEFJF 1. (40%) Performs outreach to university partners to communicate about public health careers, internship, fellowship, and other programs and activities. Coordinates and participates in other activities related to the public health workforce as well as sharing opportunities for collaboration between DSHS and academic partners. These may include career fairs, student group events, virtual events, and classroom lectures.EJF 2. (30%) Participates in different workgroups and meetings related to public health and academic partnerships/outreach. This may include coordination meetings, taking detailed minutes, and tracking action items. Communicates with internal and external stakeholders verbally and in writing related to meetings and workgroups. This includes emailing potential academic partners, making calendar invitations, scheduling rooms, sending reminder emails, organizing, and distributing meetings materials and updating agendas and other documents as appropriate.EJF 3. (20%) Collects, organizes, analyzes, and prepares materials related to academic outreach activities and events. Creates content such as articles, flyers, info sheets, and presentations Researches and writes summary reports around best practices related to early career programs and initiatives. Updates databases to support workforce development programs.EJF 4. (10%) Other duties as assigned, including other administrative support to the Office of Practice and Learning.
Knowledge Skills Abilities: - Knowledge of the features and functionality of Microsoft office tools, including Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams and Word
- Skill in time management, planning, developing, and implementing procedures an work systems to manage multiple tasks heavy workloads, and frequent deadlines.
- Skill in editing and formatting documents, forms, reports, correspondence and memoranda.
- Strong understanding of immunization programs, public health initiatives, and healthcare systems.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans, manage projects, and achieve measurable outcomes.
- Proficiency in date analysis reporting, and use of relevant software applications.
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and policies governing public health programs and immunization services.
General Qualification Guidelines, Experience and Education - Must HaveMust have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Knowledge of public health, health education, and health communication.
- Knowledge of Survey Monkey and similar programs
- Skill in oral and written communication
- Skills in managing/tracking information and data in Excel or other data management tools.
- Skills in Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Skills in interpersonal communication
- Ability to problem solve
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work in a team environment
