Position Type: Specialized Schools /Programs/Teacher/SpecialistDate Posted: 11/25/2024Location: Capital Administrative OfficeDate Available: as soon as possibleClosing Date: until filledDistrict: Capital School DistrictJob Title: Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist Location: Capital School District Reports to: Director of Special Education Terms: 10 Month Employee - temporary for the year Salary: Current Teacher Salary Schedule Position Overview: The Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting students with disabilities by providing expert knowledge and services related to assistive technology tools and devices. This position involves evaluating students' needs, recommending appropriate technology, training staff, and collaborating with families to ensure effective use of AT to enhance educational opportunities and promote student independence. Key Responsibilities: Assessment & Evaluation:
  • Conduct assessments of students' functional abilities and learning needs to identify appropriate assistive technology tools and strategies.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and other service providers to determine students' AT needs and assist in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Ensure that all recommendations align with students' academic, communication, and physical needs.
Implementation & Support:
  • Provide hands-on training to students, teachers, and staff on the use of AT devices, software, and applications.
  • Support the integration of AT into daily lessons, classroom activities, and individualized instruction.
  • Ensure AT equipment is properly maintained, functioning, and accessible for students.
Collaboration & Consultation:
  • Work closely with the Special Education team to ensure that AT services are being implemented effectively across the district.
  • Serve as a resource to teachers and staff for ongoing troubleshooting and adapting AT tools for varying student needs.
  • Consult with families to discuss AT recommendations, training opportunities, and strategies for home use.
Professional Development & Training:
  • Plan and deliver workshops, seminars, and other professional development opportunities for staff on AT tools and best practices.
  • Stay current with developments in the field of assistive technology and share updates with relevant stakeholders.
Documentation & Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments, equipment usage, and staff/student training.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports and data on AT effectiveness for IEP meetings and district reviews.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Educational Technology, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a related field (Master's degree preferred). Qualifications
  • SLP or Specialist Certification
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with students with disabilities, including experience with assistive technology in an educational setting.
  • Experience conducting AT assessments and providing training for staff and students.
Skills & Knowledge:
  • Strong knowledge of assistive technology devices, software, and strategies for a variety of disabilities (e.g., physical, cognitive, sensory, learning disabilities).
  • Familiarity with specialized educational software and tools (e.g., screen readers, communication devices, augmentative/alternative communication).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders (teachers, parents, administrators, students).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to adapt technology solutions for diverse learning environments.
