We are opening the world wide for members of our community to learn boldly, act with great heart, and lead wisely.Job SummaryThe Upper School at Gulliver Prep is seeking passionate and dedicated educators for a variety of positions within the Visual Arts department to join our growing team. The Visual Arts Department includes hands-on learning and teaching courses in areas such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking. Many courses are offered at both the AP and IB levels.Qualified candidates should be prepared to teach in one or more of the areas listed above with focus on:
  • Creating opportunities for discovery with a range of art mediums and approaches
  • Building skills through demonstrations and exercises
  • Differentiated instruction
  • Teaching drawing from direct observation across mediums and genres
  • Nurturing creativity
  • Providing open ended visual challenges
  • Teaching formal analysis practices and creating opportunities for students to speak and write about their work and the work of historical and contemporary artists
  • Leading and modeling constructive critique practices
  • Coordinating, installing, and managing exhibitions of students' work
  • Facilitating group discussions
In addition, within the Visual Arts Department, the Architecture Program at Gulliver Prep is very teaching intensive and offers a full curriculum of architectural design, urban planning and industrial design classes, and is one of six Signature Programs (Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Law and Litigation, International Business and Entrepreneurship, and Field Studies). Students in our program often participate in summer or school-year internships, and upper-level courses always involve solving real-world challenges, including presentations to local practicing architects, urban planners, designers, and government officials. Qualified candidates should be prepared to teach the following topics:
  • Technical drawing/drafting
  • Architectural History
  • Architectural Presentation Drawings
  • Architectural design
  • Architectural Working Drawings (Structures, Surveys, Standards, Research, Scheduling)
  • Storyboarding
  • Process Documentation
  • Portfolio Preparation
  • Digital and manual model building
  • Layout Presentation
  • Basic and, preferably, advanced principles of urban planning, green design, and industrial design.
Students in the program go on to the nation's top undergraduate architecture schools including Cornell, RISD, Pratt, Syracuse, Rice, SCI-ARC, Tulane, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, University of Chicago, Yale, Virginia Tech., Georgia Tech, Cooper Union, Architecture Association in London, and more. Qualified applicants must be able to develop and execute effective lesson plans that cover the curriculum, engage students' interests, and promote higher-order thinking. Additionally, these roles will require collaboration with other instructors of other disciplines. Applicants must be adept at keeping accurate records of student progress and communicating with students, parents, and counselors to discuss concerns or issues. Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field. Master's degree preferred
  • At least two years of teaching experience; at the upper school level is preferred.
  • For Architecture: Must be proficient in the following technology and software; ArchiCad, Revit, InDesign, SketchUp, 3ds Max, Adobe Acrobat DC, and Google Drive.
Desired Qualifications
  • Effective classroom management skills.
  • Experience employing a range of pedagogical approaches (e.g., direct instruction, project-based learning, cooperative group work).
  • Innovative thinking, strong leadership skills and the ability to demonstrate these skills to students.
  • Strong presentation abilities and effective written communication.
  • Proficient with technology, including Google and interactive whiteboards.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Applicants are expected to demonstrate evidence of effective writing instruction.
