Job Description:

This is a temporary/seasonal union position with a starting pay rate of $15.00 per hour and requires a union initiation fee upon hire and monthly union dues/fees. Minimum age of 18 and valid driver's license required. Brookfield Zoo is open 363 days a year including weekends and holidays. The timeframe for this position is typically April - December. The typical schedule for this position is Monday - Friday from either 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This position does not involve any carpentry or construction duties.

BASIC FUNCTION:

This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago by providing safe and secure entrance to construction vehicles by opening and closing various construction gates and escorting construction vehicles through the park during working hours in support of Master Planning and Capital construction projects in support of strategic goals related to guest experience and animal welfare.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* * Responsible for operating and monitoring various construction gates during working hours by opening and closing the gates to allow access to authorized contractor vehicles as assigned. Ensure construction vehicles entering the park have the proper authorization by verifying deliveries against the gate list. Obtain proper authorization for admittance and keeps record of those who do not appear on the list.

* * Drive and operate various vehicles, including golf carts, in a safe and efficient manner, escort/follow contractor vehicles as they move from a secure construction area through the park to a designated construction gate. Ensures all safety requirements are performed to protect guests, staff, animals, and property from injury while maneuvering vehicles through the park, at times through large crowds.

* Other related duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

* Must be at least 18 years of age.

* Ability to work well with minimal supervision required.

* Solid communications and interpersonal skills required.

* Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

* English fluency at a limited working proficiency.

* A valid driver's license is required on date of hire. If an Illinois resident, must possess a valid Illinois driver's license at the time of hire or must obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver's license is required at time of hire for out-of-state residents.

* One or more of the following licensures may be required: Valid C or B (CDL) Driver's License.

* Valid medical authorization card required for positions with commercial motor vehicle driving responsibilities.

DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* High school diploma or educational equivalent (e.g., GED) preferred.

* Six months experience in construction strongly preferred.

* Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This seasonal position will be required to take direction from various Plant and Facilities managers depending on the project. The typical schedule for this position is Monday - Friday from either 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Must represent Brookfield Zoo Chicago in a professional manner. Seasonal Craftsworkers must supply their own steel-toed work boots, which must be worn at all times when working. Incumbent must learn the physical layout of the Zoo, along with institutional and department operations and procedures.
