The work year for this position starts in August and continues through June, with summers off, and follows the district calendar. This posting is for part-time Roving Assistants who work on days when school is in session for students, Monday to Friday. This position requires the ability to report to all locations within the Portland Public Schools District (City of Portland), so flexibility is essential.
- Assistant Rovers receive continued assignments throughout the school year, working up to 5 hours per day.
- Assignments are made via phone call between 6:00AM - 6:30AM.
- Shifts vary and are typically from 2 to 5 hours daily, scheduled between 7:30AM and 2:30PM.
- Additional optional summer work options are available (not guaranteed).

- Prepare nutritious, high-quality meals for PPS students.
- Providing excellent customer service.
- Cashiering and handling cash transactions with student customers.
- Ability to handle food safely and efficiently.
- Maintaining a sanitary environment at all times.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
What you bring
- You're able to work quickly and efficiently following verbal and written instructions
- You're able to lift up to 50 lbs.; push or pull 70-100 lbs.; use a full range of motion at standard height work stations; able to work in uniform
- You're able to receive directions in English over the phone and at the work site.
- You're able to work with money and make changes while serving.
- You'll maintain a current Multnomah County Food Handler's Certification (not required at time of hire but needed in order to begin work).
- You have basic computer skills and the ability to work with a computerized cash register.
- You're willing to travel to all schools throughout the district
Preferably:
- You enjoy cooking and working with kids and students in grades Pre-K to 12th grade.
- You have experience working with children, school staff, and Nutrition Services employees
- You have experience cooking in a commercial kitchen
What we offer
- Pay : $19.47/per hour
- Schedule: August to June (170 days per year) when school is in session for students following the district calendar.

Benefits Information Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer. Effective the 2024-2025 school year Nutrition Assistant Rovers are eligible for part-time medical and pharmacy benefits.
