25 VISTA Arizona Serve - Food Forest Specialist - PUSD

PUSD's Farm to School Program provides garden-based experiences to ignite students' love of learning, build skills to sustainably grow food, improve environmental literacy, develop lifelong healthy habits and cultivate community partnerships with farm-based organizations. The AmeriCorps Food Forest Specialist will work to build an agribusiness CTE (career and technical education) program at Prescott High School (PHS), that will utilize the Food Forest Learning Lab (FFLL). The program engages high school students in the 4,800 sq ft food forest and agribusiness initiatives. The VISTA will learn agricultural skills, foster community involvement, and enhance food sovereignty on campus. Responsibilities include assessing space usage, developing evaluation tools, and analyzing data to combat food insecurity in the PHS community, empowering stakeholders to reclaim their food journey. Member Duties : Project Implementation: The AmeriCorps VISTA will craft a care and maintenance plan, while researching and developing proper food handling and food preservation methods, in accordance with the existing food safety plan, to assist the CTE program with taking ownership of the space in 3 years. Event Planning: The AmeriCorps member will assist in organizing and leading several events in order to create a sense of community in the space, such as: volunteer work days, family education events, community partner and student-led events. Assessment: The AmeriCorps VISTA will craft and implement assessments and evaluation tools to best determine use of the space, the development of the CTE program, and success of the program.
