Job Summary: Responsible for performing manual and machine operator tasks related to the set up, maintenance and operations of the press and for the quantitative and qualitative press performance. Duties/Responsibilities:
- Read and understand the job ticket, layout sheet, artwork and other specifications before beginning the assigned job (reporting any questions or problems to the First Press Operator)
- Check the plates before mounting them for any visible imperfections
- Achieve color OK to proofs under the direction of the First Press Operator of customer and sign OK sticker
- Interpret color bars, star targets, side guide marks and slur indicators to control print quality
- Maintain color during run with color OK sheets
- Check press sheets for marks and abrasions on both sides of sheets
- Pull and label samples
- Assist in wash up and cleaning procedures
- Help to direct the tasks of the press crew
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment
- Check plates and pack plates, set rollers, assist in blanket changes, washes, web up, pre-set ink fountain, record ink usage and discuss the job
- Look for flaws and check quality
- Teach and communicate with Rolltenders and Stackers
- Coordinate customer copies
- Discuss any color problems with First Press Operator
- Folder and Sheeter set up
- Inspect blankets to determine suitability for job
- Functions and operations of UV Coater may apply
- Print load tags, keep track of production report, wrap or band loads, making sure right tags go on right skid. Make sure blue line is put on samples
- Keep work area clean and orderly
- Any other duties requested by First Pressman or Supervisor
- Follow all required Safety Procedures such as: PPEs, Ergonomics, Chemical Hazards, etc.
- Perform job in a manner that protects the health and safety of all employees
- Prompt and regular attendance
Basic Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required
- A High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required
- Good eye for color and mechanical aptitude
- Ability to follow written job instructions and set up the press to carryout instructions
- Must understand basic math functions and have a thorough knowledge of problem-solving on press operations
- Must have a thorough knowledge of press operations, functions and maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees or organization
- Must have ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; use hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
- Must be adaptable and flexible and have the ability to recognize performance and limitations of others and to effectively help them overcome their limitations and achieve their maximum potential
Physical Requirements
- Mandatory hearing protection while in the production area of the plant
- During normal production, direct chemical exposure is moderate. However, during setting up and cleaning, Press Department personnel are exposed to a number of chemicals including ink and blanket wash
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and chemical protective gloves are required with use of any chemicals
- Required standing for the majority of the shift
- Lifting maximum is approximately 50 pounds
- Temperature ranges are on the warm side all year long
