To those ends, a specific position has been created to support newcomer multilingual students. The 6-12 Transition Counselor will work to shepard newcomer students through their initial enrollment and transition into the PCSD through graduation. The ideal candidate will be able to focus on supporting student engagement in school, while simultaneously building and maintaining relationships with students and families through the entirety of their PCSD schooling. The 6-12 Transition Counselor will report to the Director of Multilingual Programs and Academic Support. RESPONSIBILITIES: The specific responsibilities of the 6-12 Newcomer Transition Counselor include, but are not exclusively limited to the following responsibilities:
  • Facilitate meetings with families in the preferred language, and help to coordinate translation services for families when needed for meetings with other district personnel. Provide resources to families in their preferred language;
  • Use a culturally responsive and assets based approach to assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in developing education and occupation plans consistent with such evaluation;
  • Facilitate peer mentoring program for newcomer students that connects newcomers with an intentionally selected peer mentor;
  • Hold formal monthly newcomer meetings with students through their third year in PCSD;
  • Act as a liaison coordinating services with building-level and community-level resources for newcomer students and families;
  • Advocate for correct programming and placement based on individualized student profile, including review of foreign transcripts, intake interviews, ENL testing and other district level intake materials alongside recommendations from PMS and PHS ENL department chairs;
  • Create strategic and individualized graduation, postsecondary and career plans in collaboration with PMS and PHS school counselors leveraging an assets based approach to students' funds of knowledge;
  • Assists in registration and the district's dropout prevention efforts;
  • Encourage student participation in school and community activities to foster student growth;
  • Provide culturally-relevant short-term, solution-focused counseling on an individual and group basis, according to need in addition to the monthly formal newcomers meetings;
  • Be an active member of the Seal of Biliteracy Committee;
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor in support of PCSD district goals.
APPOINTMENT: Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience, certifications, credentials and evaluation of service. Personal interviews shall be conducted where appropriate.
