The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.CLASS DESCRIPTIONA 911 Operator operates emergency telephone equipment and answers emergency 911 telephone calls for assistance from the general public. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a rotating shift including weekends and legal holidays. Work is performed in an office where there are few hazardous conditions but where high mental pressure and stress may be encountered at times. Work requires minimal physical exertion.SELECTION PROCESSAll candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. Qualified candidates will not be listed in rank order.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSOn or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.ANDEXPERIENCE: Have one year of experience in public contact work.ORNOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Employees hired after June 1, 2011, into this class, must obtain and maintain certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Emergency Fire Dispatcher through the certification body used by the Baltimore City Police Department as a condition of their continued employment.In the event of changes in the standards of certification requirements, current employees in this class must maintain required certifications as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Emergency Fire Dispatcher as a condition of continued employment with the Baltimore City Police Department.NOTE: Candidates for positions in this class will be fingerprinted and must undergo Federal, State and Local fingerprint checks and a background investigation.Candidates must pass physical, psychological and drug tests.Competency in keyboard accuracy and speed may be examined at time of interview.KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES* Knowledge of the practices and procedures of computerized data entry.* Ability to deal with the public effectively, tactfully and calmly in emergency situations.* Ability to speak clearly and concisely in English.* Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and sound judgement in dealing with emergency situations.* Ability to record data accurately within limited time periods.* Ability to operate computer terminals and keyboards.* Ability to type or key stroke with speed and accuracy.EXAMINATION PROCESSApplicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment.
