Location:YMCA of the SuncoastChild Care SpecialistClassical Preparatory, 16500 Lyceum Way, Spring Hill 34510Rate of pay: $14.50/hr. - $15.00/hr.Shift: Monday - Friday. Hours may vary 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm Location is off of Shady Hill Road, North Pasco CountyJob Summary: The Youth Development Specialist oversees the engagement and development of children participating in YMCA programs. They are responsible for implementing and facilitating enriching activities tailored to their assigned group, supporting the YMCA's mission to strengthen community bonds through positive interactions with members. Members encompass anyone with a current or potential relationship with the YMCA, including children, parents, staff, volunteers, community members, donors, and guests.Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise a designated group of children to ensure their safety at all times.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, including monitoring bathroom breaks and transitions, and verify attendance through face-to-name verification.
  • Communicate and document children's absences, injuries, and incidents following YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Utilize positive reinforcement techniques to encourage appropriate behavior; document and address inappropriate behavior using disciplinary protocols.
  • Facilitate purposeful programming that supports academic growth and provides enrichment opportunities for children.
  • Build relationships and foster a sense of belonging among children, parents, volunteers, staff, and school personnel.
  • Ensure a nurturing and secure environment by reporting any suspicious activities that may endanger children or violate codes of conduct; maintain organization of supplies, cleanliness of facilities, and care for equipment.
  • Promote a welcoming environment for all members, demonstrating SMART behavior as a role model.
  • Educate members about YMCA services and initiatives, actively connecting them with YMCA offerings.
  • Support the YMCA's strategic initiatives by:
    • Promoting a culture of volunteerism by informing members about volunteer opportunities.
    • Encouraging philanthropy by sharing personal YMCA experiences and inviting participation in fundraising efforts.
    • Celebrating members' achievements in health and well-being goals.
    • Promoting meaningful youth programs and services to nurture the potential of all youth.

Within 90 days of hire, Principles of Youth Development training required. Within 6 months of hire, Introduction to S.A.F.E. training required. Within 90 days of completing MODS, Preventing Sexual Abuse Between Youth Children, Youth Affirmations: Distinguishing Between Praise and Encouragement, Foundations of Listen First, and Engaging with Families trainings required.Education: Must have a high school diploma, a certificate of completion, a GED or be enrolled in and attending GED classes and successfully complete within two years of employment. May also be enrolled in and obtain their high school diploma within the school year they were employed. College degree in a child-related field is preferred.Work Experience: Experience working with children preferred.Certificates/Licenses: Must have or be enrolled in state mandated trainings within 30 days of employment. Trainings must be complete within 12 months of employment. CPR/AED, First Aid, Lifeguard and Listen First certification preferred.Physical: Must be 16 years of age or older. Must be able to stand, remain outdoors and maintain continual physical endurance for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, watch, listen and facilitate group activities.Mental: Must be mentally alert and be able to process and follow directions.Skills: Must be able to supervise and instruct large groups of children.
