One year of full-time experience in an academic advising, counseling, or student services setting at the college or university level working with students. Excellent communication skills. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (*Out-of-State Applicants, see Special Notes ).Preferred Qualifications:Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling or related discipline. Experience in academic advising, working with undergraduates. Experience working with an engineering student population and/or knowledge of engineering disciplines. Experience coordinating programs and/or events. Experience planning or participating in new student orientation. Experience planning or participating in recruitment events working with high school students and parents. Experience presenting workshops and/or trainings.Brief Description of Duties:This position supports the recruitment and retention of undergraduates in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The position works closely with the Assistant Director of Student Services and Senior Assistant Dean to participate in recruitment and outreach events in area high schools and community colleges. The position is also the liaison to Admissions counselors for training on CEAS programs, and supports retention of students in the CEAS through advising a cohort of students in the Area of Interest (AOI) program, planning events and activities throughout the year and building connections with faculty, staff, and student constituents. This position is responsible for providing continuous comprehensive academic advising to all College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) undergraduate students. The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.* Advising:* Provide high quality, proactive academic advising to undergraduates in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (approximately 3,900 students), adhering to local policies and procedures, but also to the specialized and complex New York State laws that govern professional licensing programs. Such advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies/procedures.* Develop advising strategies, outreach, tracking and retention efforts toward College/institutional goals.* Evaluate student record/degree audit each semester and utilize data and analytics to identify areas for intervention.* Recruitment:* Address inquiries from prospective freshmen and transfer students in person, email and phone.* Participate in the recruitment of high school and community college students to the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, with an emphasis on initiatives to enhance diversity in the student body.* Maintain and draft changes to the prospective student content on the CEAS website.* Support Office of Admissions on-campus recruitment initiatives, coordinates CEAS involvement in programs such as, but not limited to Admitted Students Day, Open House, Visit a Class, Engineering Day, individual prospective student visits.* Coordinate and conduct yield initiatives (with support from CEAS Department faculty, staff and students) such as monthly major-specific presentations and weekly lab tours for prospective high school and transfer students.* Solicit support from CEAS departments/students to develop engineering activities for recruitment events.* Travel to local feeder schools with representatives from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and conduct presentations to prospective students.* Work with the Assistant Director to evaluate the efficacy of current recruitment initiatives and identify areas of improvement.* Recruit and train high achieving students to support the College at University-wide events such as CEAS Advancement activities, Admitted Students receptions, etc.* New Student Enrollment:* Conduct proactive outreach to incoming CEAS transfer students, including students admitted to West-campus and online programs within the CEAS.* Prepare communication series, materials and handouts for all incoming CEAS freshmen and transfer students.* Schedule and host virtual and/or in person group registration workshops for first year students. Devise workshop structure and assist with training other staff participants.* Make course recommendations for enrollment based on the evaluation of transfer credits. Enroll students in required courses and attend orientation sessions.* Retention Support:* Work with the Academic Success Advisor to conduct a semesterly review of a cohort of AOI students to ensure they are making progress toward major declaration and timely graduation.* Conduct proactive outreach to AOI students flagged at risk of failing courses, and provide appropriate and timely referrals to resources to support their success.* Help students develop meaningful educational plans that are compatible with career and life goals, including selection of appropriate courses and interpretation of institutional requirements toward established goals.* CEAS and University-wide Initiatives:* Participate in CEAS convocation, Engineering Ball/Hall of Fame and other college events.* Participate in major/minor events and other campus advising events.* Initiate, plan and execute College-wide events including Opening Week and other College traditions. Includes some nights and weekends.* Other duties or projects as assigned and appropriate to rank and departmental mission.Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
