To implement projects to achieve specific academic advising outcomes. To implement the core values of the institution. To initiate career conversations with students. To apply legal guidelines of advising practices, including privacy regulations and confidentiality. To provide a holistic approach to advising that connects to and supports the unit vision and mission while using multiple support resources. To implement equitable and inclusive strategies within academic advising practices. To engage in ongoing individual assessment and development of self and the advising practice. To lead group presentations and further develop communication skills and understanding of policies and procedures. To provide service to UAB and department/unit communities.Key Duties & Responsibilities1. Applies the core values and theories relevant to academic advising and adapts academic advisingapproaches to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Implements projects to achievespecific academic advising outcomes, equitable and inclusive strategies within academic advisingpractices and ethical guidelines outlined by university and National Academic Advising Association(NACADA). Understands the history and the role of academic advising in higher education.2. Implements the core values of the institution. Initiates career conversations with students andapplies legal guidelines of advising practices, including privacy regulations and confidentiality (i.e.,FERPA). Articulates the intent of general education, school/college and program requirements.Creates education plans and tracks how students progress toward graduation requirements. Usesappropriate information sources and refers students to other resources when necessary. Explainsand clarifies institutional regulations, policies, offerings and procedures. Knows student bodycharacteristics. Knows campus and community resources that support student success andgenerally knows other programs on campus.3. Provides a holistic approach to advising that connects to and supports the unit vision and missionwhile using multiple support resources. Implements equitable and inclusive strategies withinacademic advising practices. Engages in ongoing individual assessment and development of selfand the advising practice. Creates rapport and maintains relationships with a basic level of ability.Facilitates student appointments. Continues to develop both oral and written communication skills4. Leads group presentations and further develops communication skills and understanding of policies,procedures, etc. (e.g., orientation and UAB Days) and provides service to UAB and department/unitcommunities (e.g., Council of Academic Advisors committee). Provides guidance and advice tostudents on course selection, course prerequisites, career planning and continuing highereducation. Proactively identifies and provides support to students who are not meeting theacademic expectations of the program and the university (i.e., warning, probation suspension).5. Contacts unregistered students for outreach and retention of students. Coordinates support servicesfor students including, referrals to other offices as required. Assists with student recruitment,orientation and retention (some evening and weekend work required). Maintains accurate studentinformation, records and adheres to confidentiality standards. Prepares special and recurringreports regarding status of students and/or assists with departments with course curriculumscheduling initiatives. Processes applications for degrees.6. Identifies area(s) of focus and expertise. Has pre-scheduled hours of professional developmenteach year (i.e., coursework, conferences, etc.) Is involved with professional association(s).Participates in campus Council of Academic Advisors (CAA). Proposes or presents at professionalconference or campus event (such as CAA) (minimum 1).7. Performs other duties as assigned.Annual Salary Range: $43,890 - $71,320Master's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required.
