Title: Academic AdvisorDepartment: Academic & Transfer AdvisingCampus Location: Arnold/Main CampusSalary Range: $58,656-$71,760Work Mode: This position requires regular in-person presence on campus and at alternative locations, depending on class schedule and other assigned duties.Hours Per Week: 40Work Schedule:Position Type: Full-Time Staff, ExemptPosition SummaryAcademic Advisors are responsible for assisting students in the development of educational, career and transfer plans through the assimilation of information from a variety of sources, course selection, interpretation of academic rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and intervention and referral to appropriate services and resources. Academic advisors are expected to stay current with advising strategies and to employ a variety of strategies as they work to assist students in accomplishing their goals. Academic advisors participate on advising teams and must regularly communicate with student groups and act as liaisons to AACC departments. The goal of this position is to collaborate with other engagement and high impact practices on campus and increase retention and pathways to completion of all students. The advisor will participate in success strategies designed to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity, and sustained academic achievement. Last, the expectation for this position is for the advisor to support student academic and career momentum as they progress toward meaningful careers.Each academic advisor has a few unique duties and responsibilities particular to the population of students to which they are assigned.Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) is committed to enriching the educational experience it offers through the diversity of its faculty, administrators, and staff members. The college will annually review this restriction and, if appropriate, expand the list of states of employment eligibility.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssist students in all phases of academic advising and career planning, & in the skills needed to develop an educational plan, leading to a guided pathway to completion. Evaluate records & provide detailed information on program requirements, transfer requirements, curriculum choice, course selection, registration procedures, AACC policies, procedures, rules & regulations. Ensure that developmental students begin all required developmental course sequences & continue in that sequence to facilitate readiness for credit coursework and timely degree completion. Maintain records and notes.Meet with students identified as at-risk to acquaint them with available college support services and resources, draft student success contracts for students who receive unsatisfactory interim grades or fail to make satisfactory academic progress, and make internal and external referrals as needed. Assist students with petitions requesting exceptions to college policy, course substitutions, and readmission. Provide outreach to classrooms and departments via success workshops tailored to the needs of the students. Unique duties particular to the population of students assigned.Use technology to view, sort, and monitor student caseloads, communicate and foster professional relationships with students, teach students about online services through MyAACC. Contribute to weekly, monthly and annual reports, attend staff meetings and training sessions, Accompany counselors responding to crisis situations. Assist director with identifying strategies to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity of outcomes. Work in concert with other college departments, and serve on committees.Required Qualifications:Master's degree or higherMinimum of two years of experience in advising in a post-secondary academic setting required.Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all student groups, faculty, administrators, professional and support staff, and the public.Working knowledge of student development theories required.Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills. Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, ability to master student information systems.Ability to work 40 hours per week during operating hours at all AACC locations to meet the needs of students; evening and Saturday hours may be required as part of the weekly schedule. Use of leave is restricted in January and August to accommodate peak registration periods.Preferred Qualifications:Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.Prior work with underrepresented populations preferred.Prior work with student populations to which the advisor will be assigned.Knowledge of current engagement and high impact practices designed for community colleges preferred.Work with community college students planning to transfer to 4-year institutions preferred.Knowledge of transfer resources such as recommended transfer programs, state-wide articulation agreements, institution- specific articulation agreements, and state legislation impacting transfer.
