The Academic Counselor/Tutorial Coordinator position is responsible for providing student athletes in assigned sport(s) comprehensive academic advising and support service programs. This position will also be responsible for assisting in hiring, training and supervising STEM tutors within the tutor program. Being up to date on University of Pittsburgh, ACC, and NCAA rules and regulations in regard to the academics of student athletes is essential. Responsibilities included but are not limited to:
- Ensuring student athletes understand all available services that are provided by ASSSA and the University
- Maintaining student records in accordance with state/federal law and university regulations
- Monitoring student performance and resolving student issues with the implementation of academic resources and/or programs
- Creating appropriate Individual Academic Plans and goals for assigned student athletes
- Promoting study skill development and learning strategies
- Communicating with athletics administration, coaching staff and faculty regarding student athlete progress
- Assisting coaching staff in the recruitment and admissions of prospective student athletes
- Meeting regularly with respective coaches to discuss the academic progress of athletic teams
- Collaborating with campus advising units in assisting students in scheduling, planning term work, choosing majors, formulating degree plans, and implementing individual academic plans related to student athletes
- Assist in hiring, training and supervising STEM tutors for the ASSSA Tutorial Program
Job SummaryUtilizes advanced advising knowledge, theory, and practical experience to serve as an academic liaison for students to identify academic and career goals, select appropriate courses, and plan for degree attainment. Manages small to medium-sized, moderately complex projects.Essential Functions Advises students regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.Assists students with identification of long-term goals and career plans. Works to position students to meet requirements for graduation while preparing them to achieve future career goals.Assists in hiring and training of peer tutors.Assists coaching staff in the recruitment and admissions of students.Interprets NCAA and University policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff.Maintains student and advising records in accordance with state/federal law and university regulations. Monitors student performance and resolves student issues with the implementation of academic resources and/or programs.Coordinates advising programs such as peer advising, career placement, internships, or other college programs. Serves on appropriate department, college, and or campus advisor committees. Collaborates across departments on campus referrals when appropriate.Develops and oversees tutorial and advising functions, applies specialized knowledge, and may assist in the training of new academic advisors and support staff.Models the core values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Academic Advisor.Reports incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct to the University Title IX Coordinator.Physical Effort Duties are primarily sedentary. The ability to travel around campus occasionally is necessary.
