Posting DetailsPosition Information Position Title Academic Specialist Job Description The Academic Specialist advises students for the semester; conducts initial orientation appointments with new students; analyzes student records in preparation for orientation appointments; participates in staff development, workshops, programs, and administrative functions; receives and gives referrals to and from faculty and other university officials for students' major considerations, academic issues, and/or social concerns; and collaborates with faculty to monitor student's academic progress. Academic Specialist is required to monitor and report student's academic progress; prepare and submit monthly advising reports; maintain confidentiality and accurate student's information; identify and advise students who are not meeting satisfactory academic progress; and assist students through academic, career, personal, financial aid advising, academic abilities, and setting goals.The Academic Specialist will introduce students to the academic rules, policies, procedures, and other services of the university; assist students with educational, personal, and social difficulties; and schedule regular appointments with students for advising purposes; and collect student's data in Student Access and LASSI for assessment and reporting purposes. The Academic Specialist will provide individual and group academic advisement to a caseload of (75) students. Reports directly to the Director of Student Support Services and receives occasional direction from the Executive Director of University College and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.Essential Job Functions:1. Provide individual and group academic advising to a caseload of SSS students; maintain a tracking system for the SSS Program of current and former participants.2. Assist with the Annual Performance Report (APR).3. Assist with workshops and other student retention activities. Produce and distribute information related to educational opportunities, resources, and SSS activities.4. Provide educational and academic information to SSS participants regarding post-secondary selection and planning, admissions requirements, application processes, general education, and graduation requirements. Provide informational advising regarding financial aid types and availability, application requirements and processes, referral to funding sources, and assistance with application completion.5. Provide career exploration and guidance activities, and coordinate the interpretation of assessments. Provide occupational information and make referrals to educational programs.6. Maintain confidential student files to document participant contact for internal and external reporting purposes (including assessment results, services provided, educational plans, and follow-up activities).7. Evaluate current and transfer students' transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.8. Assist students in selecting a major(s) and career exploration(s). Refer students to campus resource(s) that meet their needs.9. Assess the student's stage of development (academic, financial, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.10.
