The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is seeking an experienced Accelerator Technician. ATLAS is the world's first heavy ion superconducting linear accelerator, and for over three decades has operated as a user facility to explore the frontiers of nuclear physics and applications. The accelerator delivers high energy ions via a combination of DC and RF electromagnetic fields. The Technician's responsibilities include
* installation and maintenance of beamline mechanical systems
* troubleshooting of accelerator diagnostic devices - Faraday cups, wire scanners, etc.
* support for water and electric utilities
* maintaining and documenting equipment in support of the ATLAS accelerator operations.
This position requires experience with mechanical assembly and fabrication, and the ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks, communicate effectively, and provide documentation to system non-experts. Projects can vary from one to the next and the successful applicant must thrive in taking on new challenges, and must be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Proficiency with the safe use and best practices of hand-held power tools and hand tools
* Proficiency with the fabrication of parts using basic shop tools and drawings
* Proficiency in general mechanical assembly
* Experience logging and documenting system maintenance, performance, and modifications
* Ability to work independently following verbal or written instructions
* Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to use multi-meters and other basic electrical measuring tools
* Familiarity with relay logic, interlock systems, or basic computer code
* Experience with programmable logic controllers
* Familiarity with electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
* Understanding of basic vacuum principles and best practices
* Experience with alignment equipment
* Experience with Computer Aided Drafting and Dimensioning software
* Experience at an accelerator facility
SUPPORT TECHNICAL (ST) MINIMUM EDUCATION & RELATED EXPERIENCE OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATIONS:
* LEVEL 1-AA degree or high school & 1-3 yrs
* LEVEL 2-AA degree or high school & 5+ yrs
