Take the first step in the right direction-are you READY?Position Summary:Utilizes accounting principles to ensure compliance with regulatory accounting principles. Maintains the general ledger, compiles and analyzes financial information, and creates monthly, quarterly and annual reports and ensures financial information has been recorded accurately. Develops integrated revenue/expense analysis, projections and reports and provides financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data.Key Responsibilities/Duties:
- Prepare asset, liability and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information, including maintaining general ledger within the JD Edwards accounting system, in addition to indirect maintenance of the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable modules
- Document financial transactions by entering account information
- Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options
- Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement and other reports for PHA management and Port Commission, as well as quarterly and annual financial statements for publication and distribution to lending institutions and others.Provide variance and account analysis for internal management and Port Commission, as needed
- Record and track capital assets including additions, transfers and disposals and generate Capital Assets roll-forward on a monthly basis
- Provide information for the preparation of thefinancial budgets and forecasts related to construction projects and capital assets
- Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information
- Secure financial information by completing database backups
- Verify, allocate, post and reconcile transactions
- Produce error-free accounting reports and present their results
- Analyze financial information and summarize financial status
- Provide technical support and advice on management
- Support month-end and year-end close process
- Document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Communicate effectively with clients
- Contribute to a strong client relationship through positive interactions with client personnel
- Contact all assigned locations on a quarterly basis to review and discuss any large percentage variances in expense vs budget
- Communicate with Manager and/or Director on work status and client issues that arise
- Ensure financial data integrity within the financial system is in conformity with guidance prescribed by the GFOA, GAO and GAAP
- Reconcile quarterly physical inventory count with the GL asset listing from JDE
- Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you)
- Perform all other duties as needed
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Finance or related major in a public or accredited private academic institution required
- 3+ years of related corporate accounting experience required
- CPA license a plus
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:
- Intermediate knowledge of finance accounting, budgeting, cost accounting and cost control principles, and Generally
- Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- General knowledge of policies and procedures associated with payroll and benefits administration

- Intermediate knowledge and skills in accounting software and databases and Microsoft Office suite, including Excel (pivot tables, v-lookups etc.), Word, Outlook, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of JD Edwards, Insight/Hubble Reporting Software, ReportsNow, Adobe Acrobat Standard, and Crystal Reports preferred
- Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with moderate supervision
- Ability to work with Port Houston employees at all levels and others outside the organization in a cooperative, positive manner
- Knowledge of Port operations preferred
- Knowledge of financial data analysis
