DescriptionGENERAL SUMMARYThe Accountant I performs complex accounting tasks for general ledger maintenance in all areas of the county, with a focus on grants; and performs tasks needed for grant funding, reporting and administration.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESThe intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. - Perform general ledger maintenance, which includes analyzing accounts in preparation for year-end closing and discussing findings with department heads of related accounts.
- Prepare and record journal entries allocated by fund and department for month, quarter and year end reporting.
- Manage facets of county grants, which include budget set up and transfers, accounting, reporting and coordinating with county grant administrators.
- May direct and advise accounts payable staff
- Perform other related duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
- Employees are required to comply with safety regulations, procedures, protocols, OSHA standards, and wear personal protective gear if required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and ExperiencePreferred Bachelor's degree in accountingKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
- 2 years experience in accounting required
- Working knowledge in accounting and generally accepted accounting principles
- Communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to analyze, plan and organize with attention to detail and complete work in a timely manner
- Interpersonal skills and ability to teach others the effects of accounting actions
- Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and Word
- Understanding of grant requirements
- Work independently
- Exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job
- Compare data from a variety of sources for accuracy and completeness
- Adapt to changes in work situations and priorities
- Reason/analyze; use logic to identify and resolve problems
- Evaluate, organize, and summarize data and information
