TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The purpose of the class is to perform responsible accounting work in the maintenance and review of the County's transportation financial records; to prepare financial reports, and to perform related work as assigned. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Provides accounting support in the maintenance and review of the County's financial records.

Coordinates the daily processing of accounts receivable and/or accounts payable as assigned.

May manage customer accounts for sewer, parking, water, and landfill services; provides customer service for all billing inquiries.

Prepares, enters and posts journal entries.

Reconciles and balances daily deposits.

Prepares various monthly, quarterly and annual fiscal reports and statements; prepares and maintains various accounting spreadsheets.

Collects, prepares and reviews a variety of financial information for external agency reporting requirements; gathers and prepares financial information for all departments as needed.

Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.

Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc.

Attends training, meetings, seminars and/or workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, examining or evaluating data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires handling or using machines that require moderate instruction and experience such as computers, and software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets or custom applications.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires using mathematics involving the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; or measurements, logarithmic or geometric construction. May use algebraic solutions of equations and inequalities; descriptive statistics; deductive geometry, plane and solid, and rectangular coordinates; mathematical classifications or schemes.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format and grammar; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires doing specialized technical work or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires Associate degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training equivalent that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in accounting or closely related field.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess a valid state driver's license.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires over one year and up to and including two years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
