FLSA Status: Non-Exempt ($23.32/hour)

Position Overview

The Accountant is responsible for the preparation, processing and analysis revenue, accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, preparation of monthly financial statements and other various accounting related activities.

Essential Job Functions

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

* Prepares journal entries and budget amendments.

* Performs bank reconciliations of various financial records and accounts on a monthly basis.

* Verifies accounts and resolves account discrepancies by reconciling/reviewing reconciliation of statements/transactions and investigating documentation; issuing stop payments, payments, or adjustments by facilitating discrepancy resolutions for other departments handling City monies.

* Uses electronic spreadsheets and other office tools such as calculator, word processing, etc.

* Processes various forms of receipts to the city such as electronic deposits, checks, cash, etc.

* Assists Finance personnel in the accounts payable, payroll, and the purchasing function.

* Assist all departments with budgeting, accounting information, reports from MUNIS.

* Performs month-end and year end close-out of the City's financial records.

* Performs various cash management functions for the City.

* Prepared detailed and complex schedules and supporting data for comprehensive annual audit the annual audit process.

* Resolves banking related problems with regards to deposits, cleared checks, stop payments, credit card transaction issues, new bank accounts; working with bank staff to reconcile problems.

* Answer telephone and assist callers with financial matters.

* Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, theory, and procedures; financial systems applications and methods.

* Skill in analyzing and interpreting financial records.

* Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with citizens, vendors and staff from other city departments.

* Ability to communicate effectively with and elicit cooperation of others.

* Ability to prepare accurate and complex financial reports and statements.

* Ability to prepare concise written reports using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

* Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

* Ability to operate business equipment including computer equipment and calculators.

* Ability to understand, interpret, and apply complex regulations or procedures.

* Ability to communicate with others and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

* Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

* Ability to design and maintain complex spreadsheets and data bases utilizing Microsoft excel software.

* Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

Education and Experience

A bachelor degree with major course work in a field related to accounting, plus three to five years of accounting experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered. Two years of progressively responsible experience in Accounting, preferably in a Municipal Government.
