Job Description:

The Accountant I is responsible for performing a broad range of accounting activities requiring experience, professional knowledge and application of accounting principles and practices. The incumbent performs a wide range of detailed accounting and advisory functions pertaining to assigned accounts or divisions. The incumbent ensures daily tasks are carried out in accordance with established accounting principles, court wide directives, policies and objectives. E xamines accounting source documents and account entries for conformance with standard accounting principles, court-wide procedural directives and guidelines. Reviews and authorizes invoices for payment through the countys automated financial system. Maintains reconciliation ledgers, prepares detailed cost accounting information, researches and analyzes account status, reconciles funds and accounts with funding entities and prepares journal entries when appropriate. Reviews and performs basic analyses of revenue and expenditure trends and based on results, assists with the preparation of monthly financial forecasts to funding agencies. Accounts for the processing of financial transactions for grant funds, contracts and special project billings, and monitors expenditures for compliance with funding agreements and operating budgets. Summarizes, reconciles, and cross-references accounting records maintained for funding agencies. Prepares financial statements, reports, and invoices for submission to federal, state and other funding agencies. Prepares various accounting schedules, financial statements, and specialized reports for management. Compiles financial data and performs limited financial analyses for various court funds. Develops internal schedules, reports, statistical data and supporting documentation used in compiling the annual financial reports of the court. Assists with the preparation of annual county, state and grant budgets by evaluating the prior years budget and identifying variances. Assists with gathering data for internal and external audits. Responds to auditors questions related to accounting data and procedures. Ensures compliance with the Administrative Office of the Courts Minimum Accounting Standards. Ensures financial records are maintained in compliance with the Administrative Office of the Courts financial retention schedule. A Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related field, and two years of professional level accounting experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by the Director, Finance and Human Resources. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License at the time of appointment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Typically performs duties in an office environment and may lift materials and/or equipment 20 lbs or less.
