Title: Activity Instructor - Dance

Reports To: Program Director Community School, P.S. 213

Location: 580 Hegeman Ave, Brooklyn, NY 1120

Hours: 12 - 15hrs per week; Non Exempt, 10 Months

Monday Friday 9:30am 12:00pm

Salary: $19/hr - $25/hr

Job Summary: The Activity Instructor of Performing Arts - Dance will provide performing arts education to students in grades K-5 that will teach/expose them specifically to the various genres of dance and movement within their expertise. The instructor will be expected to facilitate safe, organized activity and exercise, and emphasize and lead discussion on sportsmanship and healthy living. The role requires a passion for teaching, a deep understanding of dance and performing arts, and the ability to engage youth in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Major Duties:

  • Facilitate planned performing arts classes specific to areas of various dance genres (step, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, etc.) for program participants in grades K-5.
  • Prepare and develop age, and skill-appropriate curriculum, lesson plans, activities, and special projects that fuse genres of performing arts (specifically dance), academic, and social-emotional competencies to be reviewed by supervisors before being taught.
  • Prepare participants to showcase skills in culminating events or other special events in partnership with school staff.
  • Work with program participants to develop their artistic, educational, and leadership potential.
  • Responsible for maintaining a minimum of at least 15 students in activity per day.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported.
  • Guide program participants in examining choices, following directions and becoming involved in program activities.
  • Pre-planning of activity; activities are to provide students with structure, purposeful use of activity and self, including beginning and ending rituals.
  • Facilitate a variety of scaffolded activities based on students interest. Activities should promote teamwork, opportunity for mastery, and emotional and professional growth.
  • Foster a youth development, strengths-based environment, fostering a sense of belonging, safety, and community to participants.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and staff development training sessions, as specified.
  • Engage in program evaluation and continuous improvement discussions to strengthen operations and execute a high-quality program.
  • Delegate roles to school aides during class time to assist with the facilitation of a group (where applicable).
  • Responsible for the setup, operation and clean-up of activities and the organization, inventory and storing of relevant supplies and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must meet the following requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Some college and experience with adolescents preferred.
  • Experience and/or training relevant to the position
  • Flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm for young people
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills
  • Ability to engage youth, while setting structure and limits in a group setting.
  • Energetic, motivated self-starter and a team player
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, youth and family development and trauma-informed perspective.
