Job Description:

Position Summary: The Arts & Sciences Department at Maria College invites applications for adjunct instructors in Psychology to teach Introduction to Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Deviance and Therapy and Case Management. We are looking for an exceptional educator with the ability, energy, and intellectual charisma to be a first-rate teacher.

The fall semester runs from to Monday, August 26th through Friday, December 6th, 2024.

PSY 235 Introduction to Alcoholism and Substance Abuse - 3 credits (online section)

Course Description: This course examines alcoholism and substance abuse from historical, biological, psychological, social and cultural perspectives. It presents theoretical frameworks that help students understand the nature and course of substance abuse and dependency, as well as strategies to prevent its onset. The course introduces the assessment and diagnostic process as well as treatment approaches. This is a required course to meet the NYS OASAS 350-hours CASAC training.

PSY247 - Deviance and Therapy - 3 credits (online section)

Course Description: This course examines alcoholism and drug use from a multidisciplinary approach within modern society. Students will evaluate historical, social, legal, and political policy as it applies to alcoholism and drug use. Models of addiction, classification of addictive substances, and the diagnosis and treatment of addictive behaviors will be examined. Treatment will consist of social variables such as, but not limited to, culture, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and religion, will be evaluated in terms of alcoholism and substance use. Practical application of course material will be emphasized. This is a required course to earn the CASAC certificate of completion. This is a required course to meet the NYS OASAS 350-hours CASAC training.

PSY317 - Case Management - 3 credits

Course Description: You will consider the role of case manager as the hub of treatment planning, referral, and evaluation as well as learning about how the role of case manager is vital to effective cost containment, high quality care, and consumer satisfaction. This course focuses on the case management process. Students develop an understanding of the primary concepts and process of case management. Management including client assessment, collaborative problem solving, treatment planning, referral, participation in treatment teams, record keeping and outcomes evaluation. Attention is paid to documentation, the interview, assessment, developing a service plan, managing information, networking, monitoring services, referral and successful termination and discharge. This is a required course to meet the NYS OASAS 350-hours CASAC training.

Minimum Job Requirements: PhD in Psychology, Counselor Education or master's degree in Addictions or Substance Use field by the time of appointment is preferred; some college teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Ability to teach basic and advanced concepts to students in various academic programs.

* Preference will be given to those who have prior teaching experience.

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and commitment to excellence in teaching students of diverse backgrounds.

* Teaching experience with the Blackboard LMS.

* Facilitate courses/training covering the competencies associated with the 350-hour education requirement for CASAC certification, given by the Office of Addiction Services and Support (OASAS).

* Proven work experience as a CASAC, LCSW, MHC with Substance Use Disorder.
