Description

The Religious Studies department at Iona University seeks to hire Adjunct instructors for Fall 2024 to teach two sections of the course RST 317--The American Religious Experience, and one section of the course RST 328--The Religious Imagination. Course descriptions and section timings are provided below. Note that there is flexibility regarding content, structure, and evaluation. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching similar courses. For candidates applying to teach The American Religious Experience, preference will be given to those able to teach both sections of the course, and with expertise in Native American Religiosity/Indigenous Religious Traditions of the Americas. All sections are capped at 26 students. Minimum qualification for all applicants: Masters Degree.

The American Religious Experience. Course description:

A study of the mutual interaction of religion and American culture, which has given rise to a unique variety of religious leaders and expressions. Topics to be considered include the Puritan ethos in American history and literature, the concerns and conflicts of various immigrant groups, civic religion; pluralism and American culture, church - state relations.

* Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:30AM-10:48AM

The Religious Imagination. Course Description:

This course explores the myriad ways that human beings have encountered the sacred as an alluring yet perplexing horizon of existence. The course examines the rich variety of such encounters as they have been expressed across history and cultures. Students will also explore how our ideas of the self, society, and the cosmos are shaped by the religious imagination.
