Class Definition
Transcribe recorded interviews conducted by law enforcement agency conducting investigations of varying types, to be used in criminal complaints and court proceedings while supervising one or more employees also responsible for transcription. Knowledge of records functions, to include; expungements and records retention.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: may supervise one or more employees in a lower class doing transcription work.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: to work under the general supervision of a superior.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed
Transcribe recorded interviews conducted by law enforcement agency conducting investigations of varying types, verbatim. To be used in criminal complaints and court proceedings.
Transcribe minutes, letters, memoranda; extract recordings from digital audio files and load into specific transcription software;
Proofread and format varying types of background investigations conducted by law enforcement agency;
Store and maintain audio files of interviews conducted by members of law enforcement;
Operate a personal computer/networked terminal loaded with word processing software and connected to a printer to produce text documents;
Operate a photocopier;
Check records for accuracy and completeness; Proofread correspondence and other typed materials; Collate and assemble documents and materials; Compose routine correspondence and memoranda;
Type correspondence, memoranda, reports or other materials from draft or handwritten copies; Answer telephone, screen, and refer calls;
Maintain alphabetic or numeric files;
Ability to assist with all functions performed with police records; to include expungements, records retention and preparing/submitting criminal packages.

Required Qualifications for Appointment
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Others (KSAO): The ability to take transcription from recording device or digital audio files and proof, format written reports; the ability to transcribe 45 words per minute for 5 minutes; a working knowledge of the software and hardware utilized for text processing, particularly the keyboard, and skill (speed and accuracy) in usage; the ability to transcribe interviews verbatim, ensuring their final form can be used for the adjudication of criminal cases in the court system; a working knowledge of office methods, procedures, practices and terms; a commanding knowledge of grammar, format, and business English; knowledge of Microsoft suite, the ability to adapt to computer programs, the ability to interpret and follow guidelines, policy and general laws as they relate to reports and records, exceptional organizational skills; the ability to maintain effective working relationships with others; and other related KSAO's. Confidentiality of all work products is essential.
Education and Experience:
Education: graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in transcription, keyboarding/typing, and word processing.
Experience: extensive experience in a law enforcement agency transcribing recorded interviews as part of law enforcement investigations. Experience with proper maintenance of police records.
Special Requirements: A comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Rhode Island State Police.
