THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

The City of San Luis Obispo is looking for a passionate candidate who intimately understands the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, community-outreach and involvement, in both the government setting and the community at large.

The successful, caring, and dynamic candidate will have proven professional, educational, and personal lived experience, or a combination of all in providing support and leading projects and programs to completion in which prioritization of a DEI lens is embedded.

The candidate will be a culturally and emotionally competent individual to support the Office of DEI. They will embody cultural humility, trauma-informed practices, and the confidence of a change agent in the organization, while strategically approaching projects and problems with innovative solutions, engagement, and candor. The candidate will create safe and brave environments for staff and the community to feel and be engaged in participation, by furthering the Office of DEI goals and tactics. The individual must be empathetic, open-minded, have lived experience in diverse backgrounds and environments, eager to learn from others and collegially work in collaboration with and follow directions from the DEI Manager and support the overall City Council vision.

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Candidates must submit an online application by 5:00 pm on October 20, 2024. Once the position has closed, applications that meet the minimum qualifications for the role will be reviewed by a panel comprised of City staff and community partners. After applications are reviewed by the panel, candidates will be notified of their status and those selected to move forward in the recruitment process will be invited to interview. Please note that this classification is used by multiple departments but this recruitment will establish an eligibility list for the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions of this class.)

* Recommends and implements procedures, guidelines, and processes; consults with managers and drafts policies.

* Prepares statistical and narrative reports, presentations, general and technical correspondence, and promotional and informational materials; develops and maintains forms, tracking systems, databases, spreadsheets, and websites.

* Resolves difficult or sensitive customer service inquiries or problems; advises the public on complex rules, policies, and procedures; responds to inquiries from employees and the public.

* Prepares and processes documents for personnel, purchasing, finance, and project and program areas (e.g., vouchers, permits, personnel actions, requisitions, contracts, and grant applications); maintains a variety of records and files.

* Supports management and professional staff in the administration and coordination of special events, training, programs, and/or projects.

* Attends onsite and offsite meetings and events; takes detailed notes and provides summaries to management and professional staff.

* Supports communication and outreach efforts of the assigned department, program, and/or project; coordinates with City communications staff to promote awareness, education, events, and/or programs.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

The successful candidate will have experience working directly with people from diverse personal and professional backgrounds and the capacity to think and engage critically and advance inclusion and equity strategies established by the Office of DEI, as well as maintain record keeping information for grant reporting and presentations to leadership.

Knowledge of:

* DEI principles, concepts, and its applications in government settings.

* Issues impacting diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic background communities.

* Understanding and applying the intersection of race, power, privilege and the history and context of an organization structure.

* Best and innovative practices for public policy, procedures, and community dialogue/engagement.

* Practice leadership, management, and supervision of tasks and projects, and reports completion accordingly.

Ability to:

* Plan, develop, organize, and implement projects, plans, programs, and initiatives as established by the Office of DEI.

* Remain informed of current DEI issues impacting the community of San Luis Obispo and the region.

* Present information, trainings, facilitate meetings, and build collaborations.

* Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to various audiences, internally and externally supporting the Office of DEI and the Council's vision.

* Represent the City and present information to collaborators, advisory bodies, community partners, and the public when required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Two years of college coursework in business, public administration, or a related field;

and

Three years of increasingly responsible administrative support or program coordination experience, preferably in a municipal government setting;

or

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:

* A valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
