Position Summary:
Assumes responsibility and accountability for care provided to patients by nursing service personnel and other hospital disciplines; directing problems, as appropriate, to unit manager or administrator taking call.

Responsibilities:
- Functions effectively as hospital supervisor/acting administrator
- Supervises and directs activities of hospital personnel; serves as a resource person for interpretation of hospital policies and procedures
- Works with the assignment nurses on the units to provide optimal staffing levels, adjusting for census and acuity as appropriate.
- Understands and accommodates bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients, including growth and developmental needs.
- Reviews the nursing office procedures manual, PIP manual, nursing policy and procedures manuals, and union contracts. Knows how to contact managers when problems or questions arise.
- Demonstrates proficiency in assessment of patients in the absence of their physician, using the findings to formulate a nursing plan of care in response to the needs of the patients; or refers the findings to the physician for additional medical or nursing interventions, as appropriate.
- Assists hospital members with maintaining the safety and security of hospital equipment, supplies, building and campus.
- Evaluates and provides individualized assistance and intervention, when needed, to meet unusual expectations and/or complaints of customers, while attempting to resolve issues that improve customer satisfaction.
- Responds to code and emergency situations: works with staff and family members in death and dying situations with a compassionate and professional manner; assists with decision making and arrangements during their time of grief.
- Handles hostile, confused, angry or agitated patients or visitors using non-violent interventions.
- Works within the union contract, applying decisions fairly to all concerned and consulting with department managers to resolve issues.
- Demonstrates proficiency in all forms of IV therapy, including short and long-term vascular access devices, their placement and maintenance.
- Remains mentally alert and maintains concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods, at times under stress. Maintains adaptability, flexibility, initiative, persistence, and efficiency of time management and action.
- Does not pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Provides safe, efficient, competent care to population assigned. Meets MMC Environment of Care Standards.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education:
None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.
Minimum Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years of hospital nursing experience with demonstrated leadership ability is required.
Licensure Requirement:
Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Tennessee Board of Nursing, or have a temporary permit to practice. Must be currently certified (or scheduled for certification or recertification training according to department guidelines) for CPR.
