DescriptionThe Advanced Clinical Nurse Educator (Advanced CNE) is an advanced practice nurse who works independently with in-depth knowledge and competence in the assigned specialty area(s) to provide clinical leadership for staff. This position is involved in process improvement activities, and includes responsibilities aimed at fostering optimal wellness for a specific patient population. Toward this goal, the Advanced CNE implements the role components of educator, consultant, expert practitioner/role model, and makes recommendations for hiring, counseling, firing special training orientees within the specialty area. The Advanced CNE is responsible for developing, evaluating and coaching the special training orientees, maintaining quality nursing practice of all nursing personnel with the specialty area, and achieving accepted patient care standards in the assigned area(s).;The Advanced CNE recommends staffing patterns based on changing patient, and community needs and practice. The Advanced CNE provides written evaluation of performance of nursing personnel to the unit manager as necessary. A commitment also exists to further develop, expand, and define the profession of nursing through linkage of nursing theory, research, and practice as well as political awareness and participation, professional presentations, and collaboration with nursing and other professional colleagues. Emphasis in this position is placed on facilitating problem solving in clinical practice and professional development of nursing personnel through independent action, direction and consultation with nursing management Core CompetenciesDevelops, modifies, and adapts assessment tools to meet the varietal needs of changing patient populations.Assesses the work setting systems to determine needed changes in nursing care delivery for specific patient populations.Serves as a resource care coordinator for appropriate patient care types.Makes recommendations to management and assists in determining clinical education policies.Demonstrates knowledge of clinical norms for the following age groups as applicable to job functions: Infancy: birth - 1 year Toddler: 1 year - 3 years Pre-School: 3 years - 6 years School Age: 6 years - 12 years Adolescent: 12 years - 18 years Adulthood: 19 years - 45 years Middle Adult: 45 years - 59 years Late Adult: 60 years - 79 years 80 years >Incorporates performance improvement and research findings into program.Serves as preceptor for baccalaureate and graduate nursing students as needed.Facilitates the learning opportunities for Affiliate school students in the assigned area(s) in collaboration with sponsoring faculty.Incorporates accepted education theories and principles of adult learning theory in planning and implementation of all programs and activities.Works in multidisciplinary teams to provide optimal integrated care for these patient populations.Assists in problem solving patient care and system issues relating to the Medical Center and Division of Nursing.Identifies opportunities for system enhancement/optimization utilizing change management processImproves the quality of nursing practice through scientific inquiry, application of research findings, and participation in nursing research studies.Evaluates and communicates valid research findings.Facilitates the development of protocols and standards of care based on valid research findings.Participates as a member on assigned Torrance Memorial committees/councils.Administers Affiliate programs and participates in special projects as requested.Participates in recruitment and retention activities.Attends professional and community meetings.Department Specific CompetenciesDevelops and evaluates personal, professional, and program goals annually.Develops, implements and evaluates clinical and departmental programs, policies and procedures.Assists in the orientation of new organization personnel.Serves as a practitioner and provides leadership in patient care. Affects patient care outcomes positively by application of a theoretical framework. Through utilization of the nursing process, enhancing patient assessment, refining problem/focus definition, implementing effective patient care, and evaluating the effectiveness of the care provided, a full range of human responses to actual or potential health problems are addressed.Provides direct patient care within the assigned area(s) in order to maintain clinical competence, provide role modeling of excellence in nursing practice, test application of the nursing process to specific patient populations, investigate patient care problem areas, define nursing staff clinical learning needs, and promote optimal interdisciplinary relationships through demonstration of clinical competence.Interacts with other health care team members to develop and implement new and/or long range patient care programs and resolve interdepartmental patient care problems/concerns.Facilitates an understanding with nursing personnel of health care economic factors involved in patient care delivery.Develops continuing education programs and participates in professional activities to maintain his/her own high level of expertise and nursing practice.Provides for educational and professional development of colleagues. In addition, the Advanced CNE facilitates the educational process of special training orientees, nursing students, nursing personnel related to optimal wellness and to disease management of the patient/client, family and community.Assists nursing personnel to identify professional and technical learning needs. Using discretion and independent judgment, frequently compares and evaluates performance and conduct of their students and clinical nursing personnel in their assigned area(s) of clinical expertise. Acts on each situation as appropriate including coaching, counseling, and consulting with management to achieve appropriate performance and behavior.Plans and teaches formal and informal professional education programs, including but not limited to seminars, inservices, case conferences, self-directed learning programs and computer assisted instruction.Assists new nursing personnel to achieve baseline competence, maintain competence of experienced nurses, and promote advancement within the clinical levels.Identifies the needs of high-risk populations and plans and/or participates in educational programs to meet those needs.Evaluates special training orientees as well as coordinates/teaches special training programs as needed within the assigned area(s).Assesses, implements and evaluates educational programs addressing health needs for the patient/client, the family and the community.Approves programs for continuing education units (CEUs), assuring adherence to guidelines established by the California Board of Registered Nurses.Consults with and evaluates patients/families who are referred by medical staff, nursing staff, CNS colleagues, nurse directors or other disciplines for development and implementation of the nursing process regarding low volume , high risk, and challenging clinical cases.Makes rounds with nursing personnel on select patients to clarify complex patient problems/foci, identify intervention options, and implement and evaluate an appropriate course of action.Consults with nurse colleagues and other disciplines in education, research and clinical practice issues.EducationDegree Program MastersNursingAdditional Information Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Required certifications as necessary to role as specified by the department of assignment to be obtained within 60 days.ExperienceNumber of Years Experience Type of Experience 24 years of recent** clinical experience that includes three years in the area of specialization.Additional Information **Recent clinical experience is defined as the last two years of full-time experience or its equivalent as an RN in an acute care setting.License / Certification RequirementsNational Certification in area of clinical specialtyRegistered Nurse LicenseBCLS or ACLS CertificationCompensation Range:$52.45 - $85.85 / hour#LI-JG1
