Summary: The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the Oncology Fellowship is to promote and maintain the health of the client across the health care continuum; participate in experiential and academic educational training for advancing nursing practice in oncology across the institution; and participate in professional development activities congruent with the role and function. Oncology nursing excellence is a central pillar in MD Anderson's worldwide reputation for cancer care. As a Magnet Recognized hospital, we provide our patients with excellent oncology nursing care. The Post Graduate Fellowship in Oncology Nursing is designed to provide advanced practice registered nurses an opportunity to experience a year-long Fellowship in Oncology Nursing at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The fellowship will include a core curriculum of clinical study that will ensure exposure to the entire spectrum of oncology care from prevention to end-of-life. Fellows will select and pursue an oncology specialty area for clinical focus and practice. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES Key Functions * Demonstrate broad skills and competence in advanced oncology nursing practice. * Demonstrate basic scientific, behavioral, nursing and medical knowledge useful in solving clinical problems commonly associated with cancer. * Describe and discuss the spectrum of cancer care from prevention to palliation. * Develop proficiency in comprehensive cancer care. * Develop and organize an evidence-based project relevant to the area of oncology clinical focus. * Participate in institutional, community and professional activities. * Engage in an individualized course of study, relevant to oncology nursing. * Complete all components of the Fellowship curriculum. * Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONSEducation Required: Minimum of a Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Experience Preferred: 2 years of clinical nursing experience. Certifications/Licensures All of the following: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100).
  • MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
