The BarthHaas Group conducts business on every continent and is a world leader in breeding, growing, processing, and marketing hops and hops products.Position Summary: The Production Chemist performs analysis of products at the Advanced Products Laboratory and assist the Production Supervisor in providing necessary production information.Primary Responsibilities: (Must consider: 1) knowledge required; 2) problem solving; and 3) accountability.)75% 1. Lab Procedures:
  • Assure that accurate and timely analytical results are provided to meet the needs of production and/or management. Keep appropriate records of results.
  • Be familiar with analytical procedures and techniques. Perform upkeep and maintenance on instruments and equipment. Maintain lab in an orderly and professional manner.
  • Prepare and analyze hops and hop products, calculate results as necessary and communicate results or problems with appropriate personnel.
20% 2. Quality/Safety:
  • Review and assist in the purchase of chemicals and supplies necessary for the efficient operation of the laboratory and ensure that the lab manager receives them in a timely manner.
  • Supervise the handling and recycling of hazardous chemical waste.
  • Complies with John I. Haas, Inc. Environmental Management system (EMS), and in particular Universal Waste, Hazardous Waste, and Emergency Response requirements.
  • Understands the importance of roles and responsibilities and potential consequence for departure from procedure
5% 3. Other duties as assigned. Conditions of Employment:
  • Must comply with all John I. Haas, Inc. policies and procedures, including successful passing of pre-employment background check and drug test.
  • Must be able to work in and around an analytical laboratory setting containing chemicals, solvents and hop products.
  • Position required long periods of standing and ability to lift 40-lb cans daily.
  • Visual and auditory acuity is required throughout all functions of this position.
  • Employee will be expected to work a 40-hour workweek. At the request of management, the employee may be scheduled for more hours or to work weekends. Overtime will be paid for hours worked over 40 per week.
  • Must comply with our Integrated Management System (IMS) and be trained on procedures applicable to the requirements of the position, including managing significant quality, environmental, and food safety aspects.
  • Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills required of the Position)Required:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in chemistry, food sciences, and technology or other science-related field.
  • Knowledge, experience and training in: hop or food industry, Quality Control / Quality Assurance, analytical instrumentation and analytical laboratory ( wet-chemistry ) techniques.
  • Must be able to communicate and work well with co-workers and management.
  • Must have good computer skills.
  • Knowledge of safety and food safety regulations.
  • Preferred:
  • Experience with Kaizen/5S
  • Experience properly disposing of hazardous waste/chemicals
  • This form indicates the general nature and level of work performed by employees with this job title. Please keep in mind this range represents the range for all positions in the pay grade within which this position falls.
