Job Description:
Gemological Science International (GSI) is seeking a passionate Advanced Testing and Screening Gemologist to join our team in New York City. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in diamond science, gemology, and advanced testing and screening methodologies for diamonds. This position offers a unique opportunity for a gemologist ready for additional responsibilities and larger organizational role. The incumbent will not only continue the high standards of GSI s testing and screening processes but will have opportunities for research, innovation, or publication. While this role is focused on diamonds, it can expand to include colored stones.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct advanced testing and screening of diamonds and gemstones using specialized equipment, including but not limited to: FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and other proprietary gemological instruments.
- Perform visual inspections of diamonds and gemstones to identify treatments, enhancements, and characteristics indicative of natural or laboratory-grown origins.
- Utilize expertise in gemological science to differentiate between natural, synthetic, and treated gemstones, as well as determine possible country of origin.
- Operate basic gemological equipment such as microscope, refractometer, crossed-polarizers, and UV lamps for comprehensive gemstone analysis.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of testing procedures, results, and findings.
- Collaborate with internal teams to provide insights and recommendations based on gemological analysis.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, advancements, and best practices in gemological science.
Qualifications:
- Required: Graduate Gemologist (GG), Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA), or other recognized industry equivalent.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Chemistry, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in gemological testing and screening, preferably in a laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in operating advanced gemological equipment, including FTIR, Raman, and other specialized instruments.
- Strong knowledge of diamond science, gemstone identification, and treatment and growth origin detection.
- Familiarity with industry standards and protocols for gemstone certification and grading.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in gemstone analysis and documentation.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
- Commitment to upholding ethical standards and integrity in gemological practices.
- Flexibility to adapt to evolving technologies and methodologies in gemological science.
