Title: Advocacy and Community Organizing Manager Department: Public Affairs Location: Lower Manhattan/39 Broadway/Food Bank events throughout the 5 boroughs as needed/Some travel to Albany and Washington, D.C.Annual Salary Range: $75,000.00-$85,000.00Job Description: The Advocacy and Community Organizing Manager will manage the implementation of campaigns for educating, organizing and empowering stakeholders (including but not limited to member network agencies staff, food pantry and soup kitchen clients, volunteers and, donors) around supporting Food Bank For New York City's food and nutrition policy, legislative and public funding priorities. Working within a fast-paced environment, this position requires an energetic, creative and resourceful individual with a strong interest in advocacy in the food, nutrition and poverty relief space, and experience to strategically implement integrated advocacy tactics and platforms including grassroots advocacy software, email, text messaging and social media to work and communicate with a broad spectrum of community and general public supporters and stakeholders. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Annual Advocacy Campaigns Strategy
  • Develop and execute an annual outreach and organizing plan specific to standard policy initiatives and 3-level government budget cycles, including identification of target audiences and communities, locally based groups and existing community organizing networks and in-person and digitally based activations.
  • Develop and execute special advocacy campaigns connected to seasonal initiatives (Example, Farm Bill Reauthorization every 5 years).
  • Collaborate on the development and communication of relevant public education materials for targeted audiences on advocacy opportunities and organizational policy priorities;
Member Network Organizing and Capacity Building:
  • Work with Food Bank for NYC's Member Services team to create and conduct training and engagement activities to develop advocacy capacity within Food Bank's network of over 800 community-based organizations in the five boroughs.
  • Maintain constituent management system and track advocacy engagements;
  • Build and coordinate advocacy cohorts among organizations, including faith- and community-based networks to participate in specific activities throughout the year;
  • Assist in coordinating advocacy activations and events such as days of action in Washington D.C and Albany.
Marketing and Communications Liaising:
  • Working with Food Bank's Communications and Marketing, create and implement digital advocacy communications strategy, working team to manage social and digital media campaigns in support of public affairs goals;
  • Act as main liaison with the Communications and Marketing team;
  • Oversee the redesign and ongoing maintenance of the Public Affairs webpages on the Food Bank website including the main advocacy portal;
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Public Affairs team and the Marketing and Communication team to create relevant public advocacy materials and to incorporate advocacy messaging into ongoing Food Bank for NYC's evergreen campaign as well as seasonal campaigns such as during Hunger Action Month and holidays/year-end campaign;
  • Manage relationships with outside marketing vendors relevant to advocacy campaigns and activities.
Evaluation and Reporting:
  • Work with Research & Evaluation team to design system to evaluate impact and success of outreach and organizing efforts;
  • Develop and present at internal and external meetings regular advocacy reports.
Special Projects Coordination:
  • Develop and implement plans to engage unique cohorts in advocacy, including Food Bank's Youth Advocacy Council;
  • Design, implement, monitor and evaluate new advocate acquisition campaign.
Other duties include:
  • Supervise any assigned staff such as summer interns;
  • Participate and contribute to team grant and fellowship applications and administration;
  • Staff advocacy related events including during some evenings and weekends;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Undergraduate college degree; advocacy, public policy, community development, social work, public administration or related field preferred but not required if demonstrated work experience in the field. Written and oral bilingual Spanish/English fluency strongly preferred. Minimum four to six years of progressive experience in community engagement and organizing, developing grassroots leadership/or issue-based outreach campaigns, preferably targeting communities in need and/or low-income, minority and/or immigrant communities; A strong interest in food, nutrition and poverty relief issues, and the experience and ability to work and communicate with a variety of audiences; Familiarity with nutrition and food systems and programs, including federal, state and local; Work effectively in an environment with diverse cultures, multiple perspectives, and competing needs Excellent administrative and organizational skills, with a demonstrated aptitude for project management; Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience with public speaking; Ability to establish priorities and a course of action for handling multiple tasks; Ability to work independently and project manage teams. Ability to attend and/or work evening/weekend meetings and events, as needed. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Project Management software such as Monday.com and mass email clients such as HubSpot applications required. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and web-based design software such as Canva desired.
