SALARY: Per AFSCME Contract: $19.94 (day 1-60) $23.68 (day 61-12 months)
$27.05 (12 month and over)
ASSIGNMENT: 12 month position/40 hours a week
Outdoor shift hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (April-November)
Indoor shift hours will be 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. (December-March)
Specific months/days/hours of outside/inside assignment will be determined based on inclement weather at the discretion of the Director of Maintenance. May also be assigned to other schools in the district.
FUNCTION: Under the general direction/supervision of the Director of Maintenance, the Building Principal, the Head Custodian and/or Athletics/Maintenance Custodian, the Groundskeeper/Custodian performs a variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping duties; maintains athletic fields; completes other custodial related duties as required to ensure safety of students, staff and the public.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):
This position will be required to maintain the outdoor facilities at the Bellingham Public Schools as assigned as well as the Bellingham Police Station, the Bellingham Fire Station, the Bellingham Public Library and the Bellingham Senior Center. The interior facilities of the Bellingham Public Schools, as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.

Outdoor Duties
* Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; edge walkways; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; sweep litter from walks, driveways and other assigned areas.
* Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass, hedges and shrubs; water various ground areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system as required.
* Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up and removing paper, trash, trimmings and debris from grounds areas, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields and other assigned areas; empty waste receptacles; report need for repairs or unsafe conditions.
* Perform a variety of grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding landscape as assigned by the position; measure and mark with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; drag, repair, mow and edge baseball infield, soccer field, football field and other areas as needed; clear debris from outdoor basketball courts.
* Operate, maintain, clean and repair a variety of equipment such as mowers, edgers, blowers, sprayers, trucks, tractors, trimmers, chainsaws, shears, trenchers, grinders, and line marking machines; utilize standard gardening hand tools; replace blades and fluids as needed; grease and change filters on equipment; repair sports equipment; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
* Assist with other grounds maintenance and repair activities including tree removal, tree topping, fence repair, general concrete repair and other repairs as requested.
* Load, unload, haul and transport supplies, clippings, debris, materials and equipment as required.
* Pick up and deliver materials at all schools when needed.
* Maintain cleanliness and supplies needed for Athletic Field Concession Stand, Restrooms, Press box and stands as necessary.
* Inventory supplies of tools, equipment, or materials to ensure that sufficient supplies are available and items are in usable conditions.
* Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or very cold (below 32 F degrees) temperatures.
* Includes exposure to contaminants.
* Requires working in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
* Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
* Requires exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings.
* Requires exposure to hazardous equipment.
* Perform all other duties as assigned.

Indoor Duties
Performs general, routine custodial duties to ensure assigned areas are prepared for the next day including, but not limited to:
* dusting, mopping, vacuuming; stripping and waxing of floors
* empty trash receptacles and disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal
* wash, sanitize, and disinfect toilets, sinks, and showers
* restocking paper products and soap supplies in lavatories
* performs cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing on surfaces to reduce viruses
* clean windows and mirrors
* reports needs and concerns to supervisor, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels
* ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies
* Cleaning, maintaining, repairing all equipment
* promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
* assumes responsibility for general security of the building
* assumes responsibility for general fire safety of the building
* Perform small building repairs
* assists in snow removal
* perform all other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
Responsible, industrious individual with knowledge and experience in groundskeeping and custodial work required.
Must possess the knowledge, skill and abilities required:
* ability to understand written and verbal communications and instructions
* ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures
* ability to read basic operating instructions and write reports
* ability to understand SDS requirements
* ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies
* ability to use all equipment, including hand and power tools

* must be physically able to perform tasks which at times may require lifting and carrying of materials weighing as much as eighty (80) pounds or more. Must be able to perform all indoor and outdoor duties.

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated the first ninety (90) days, in accordance with the provisions of the School Committee policy on evaluation of non-professional personnel.
