Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is seeking an Afterschool Substitute STEM Teacher to engage elementary-aged girls in teaching hands-on STEM activities in-person at public schools in the East Bay (Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Richmond). The substitute role serves both as a Head Teacher and Teaching Assistant. A teaching credential is not required. - $30 / hour - Sub Head Teacher
- $23 / hour - Sub Teaching Assistant
LOGISTICS:
- This is an on-call, as needed, consultant position.
- Commitment:
- Be available during after school hours (approximately 2:30 - 5:30, M - F)
- Be able to sub with same day or little notice
- Commit to subbing from September 23, 2024 - June 6, 2025.
- Commit to subbing a minimum of 10 times over the school year.
- Expectation:
- 1) Have a reliable vehicle and valid driver's license to get to the school sites.
- 2) Clearance of background check and negative TB Test.

- Substitute Head Teacher Responsibilities:
- Read facilitator guide before class
- Arrive early to set-up for lesson
- Deliver project-based, in-person STEM lessons
- Actively build relationships with students, focusing on socio-emotional development and individual strengths
- Guide Teaching Assistants and Near Peers to support students
- Clean-up between and after classes
- Substitute Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Serve as support to Head Teachers to deliver project-based, in-person STEM lessons
- Ensure attendance sheets is up to date before leaving the school site
- Lead attendance taking for each class
- Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start of class to assist the teacher with set-up
- Coordinate with the Head teacher ahead of class time regarding the project for each class and how you can best assist.
- Actively build relationships with students, focusing on socio-emotional development and individual strengths
- Do any other preparation before the class to best prepare for the class.
- Take photos during the class and email them to the head teacher promptly after each class.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- General Qualifications:
- Working towards a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree
- Possess a valid driver's license and a reliable car
- Be able to lift 40 lbs and transport STEM supplies to and from your classes.
- Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls
- Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm
- Qualifications Specific for Substitute Head Teacher:
- Have at least one solid year of teaching experience in the classroom.
- Strong classroom management skills that promote a safe and supportive learning space.
- Can connect with a wide range of students and create an inclusive environment. Experience working with BIPOC students in Title I Schools
- Qualifications Specific for Substitute Teaching Assistant:
- A minimum of one year of experience with children in some capacity
- Can connect with a wide range of students and create an inclusive environment. Experience working with BIPOC students in Title I Schools
