Class Definition
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform moderately complex engineering work in a statewide air quality program; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a superior from whom directions are received; work is reviewed forresults and conformance to accepted standards through reports and conferences.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: As required, supervises the work of technical and clerical employees assigned to assist.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed
To perform moderately complex engineering work in a statewide air quality program.
To prepare technical plans for the implementation of federal and state air quality standards.
To conduct research on the identification, causes and effects of air pollution.
To estimate emission rates from various sources and source categories to provide information on the air quality program effectiveness, potential future problems of air quality control, location of sampling stations and the need for development of new regulations.
To engage in data reduction, and statistical analysis of the air sampling programs.
To assist in the presentation of new air quality programs such as emergency episode planning and source emission registration.
To provide technical advice relating to complaints on air quality.
To do related work as required.
Required Qualifications for Appointment
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the principles and practices employed to preserve, protect and improve the air resources of the state; a working knowledge of the state laws and regulations as they relate to air quality and the ability to interpret and apply such laws; the ability to conduct research on the identification, causes and effects of air pollution; the ability to prepare reports on, and develop plans for air quality programs; the ability to gather and analyze statistical data; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Such as may have been gained through: graduation from a college of recognized standing with specialization in chemical, sanitary engineering and meteorology; and
Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment in a position in the field of engineering with special emphasis on air quality.
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Also, be advised that a new provision in RI General Law 35-6-1 was enacted requiring direct deposit for all employees. Specific to new hires, the law requires that all employees hired after September 30, 2014 participate in direct deposit.
