About Blue Grass Airport and the position: Blue Grass Airport has openings in our Department of Public Safety department for Airport Public Safety Officers. These exciting public servant positions are customer service-focused and play a vital role in the airport's public-facing responsibilities. Airport Public Safety Officers perform all duties related to airport safety and security, aircraft rescue firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical services. The Airport Public Safety Officer Recruit is a sworn position performing both police and fire duties in a unique airport environment. Training is continuous and convenient with a state-of-the-art aircraft rescue and firefighting center located on airport property. These positions are perfect for the career-focused candidate. Requirements: Candidates must be citizens of the United States of America, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be 20 years of age. You must also have an excellent background with no felony convictions or history of criminal or improper conduct which would affect suitability for law enforcement duties. Candidates are required to have a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver's license. Candidates must have the ability to interact well with the public and all airport stakeholders. Candidates must have the ability to function within a Chain of Command on a daily basis. If not currently certified, candidates will be required to successfully complete the Commonwealth of Kentucky Police Officer Professional Standards (POPS) and the Commonwealth of Kentucky Professional Firefighter II standards as well as the 14 CFR Part 139 Aircraft Rescue Firefighter certification and Emergency Medical Responder certification. Candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug screen, and complete background investigation. Schedule/Compensation: Airport Public Safety Officers will work a 24-hour on, 48- hour off schedule. This schedule includes working scheduled and unscheduled overtime, weekends, nights, holidays and call-back duty. Public Safety Officers are also required to work VIP, special and emergency events. Upon completion of certification, candidates are eligible for $4,429.00 annual State Incentive Pay Candidates can be hired at the following levels:
  • Airport Public Safety Officer Recruit (demonstrated interest in public service without POPS or Firefighter II certifications) --$50,000.00 annual
  • Airport Public Safety Officer I (either or both POPS and Firefighter II certifications) --$55,000.00 annual
Upon completion of both certifications and Emergency Medical Responder, Aircraft Rescue Firefighter and Field Training Assessment, the Airport Public Safety Officer I will be eligible for promotion to Airport Public Safety Officer II with a base salary being $60,000.00 annually.
