Job Description:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position in Cell Biology

The Department of Cell Biology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine - Montefiore Medical Center invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellow from outstanding candidates with an interest and/or expertise in (1) Hematopoietic stem cell biology (2) Bone marrow microenvironment and hematopoiesis (3) Mitochondrial function and stem cell metabolism.

The Department of Cell Biology at Einstein was one of the first in the country (founded in 1961) and has a rich and distinguished history of scientific discovery and innovation, as well as mentoring, training, and education. It consistently ranks among the top 10 in the nation in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and in the top 5 in NIH funding per investigator. Einstein possesses outstanding research faculty and enjoys an exceptionally collegial and collaborative environment. Our department has very strong ties to other basic science departments, institutes, and centers at Einstein, as well as clinical departments at Montefiore Medical Center. Candidates will be considered for a postdoctoral position in the Maryanovich lab. Einstein seeks candidates whose skills and personal and professional experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence in research, diversity, and collaboration and to the communities we serve.

The Maryanovich laboratory uses genetic mouse models and cultured cells to understand how hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are maintained and mature in the bone marrow. We study the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and its role in shaping niches for hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. The lab's primary focus is to understand how neural signals are propagated in the bone marrow niche and the consequences of SNS dysfunction on niche aging and the development of myeloid malignancies. The lab specializes in generating complex conditional, inducible, and transgenic mouse strains to dissect mechanisms/pathways in the bone marrow niche that regulate HSC maintenance. In addition, the lab focuses on developing tissue culture methodologies for the expansion of mesenchymal stem cells to study cellular networks and mechanisms of neural signal circuity. Moreover, the lab has expertise in bone marrow and other lymphoid organ imaging techniques; we are developing whole-mount bone marrow imaging, optic tissue clearing, and advanced confocal imaging methodologies for visualizing stem cell niches.

The suitable candidate will work on an NIH-funded project investigating mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction that mediate mesenchymal stem cell and HSC niche aging. The candidate should demonstrate proficiency in essential laboratory techniques, including experience working with genetic mouse models, multi-color flow cytometry, and tissue culture techniques. Prior experience in confocal microscopy and/or coding skills (Matlab, Python, or R) are highly desirable for this position. In addition to research responsibilities, the candidate will assist with instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians, and laboratory assistants as required. Thus, Good communication skills in English are essential to be able to work with the team.
