The purpose of the Motors Unit is to create and facilitate safe streets throughout the City of Alexandria. This is accomplished by preventing dangerous driving, protecting all commuters, and promoting voluntary compliance with traffic safety laws. Utilizing the Alex311 customer service initiative, the Traffic Safety Plan (TSP), and Vision Zero, Motor officers focus on:
* Selective enforcement operations
* Proactive use of resources to reduce traffic crashes and injuries
* Strategic deployment of speed trailers
* Aggressive enforcement of moving violations
* Traffic direction and control
* Public Education
* Speed measurement education (including Radar/Lidar training and EVOC)
The duties and responsibilities of officers assigned to the Motors unit include, but are not limited to:
* General traffic enforcement
* Radar & laser speed enforcement
* Providing escorts
* Assisting patrol officers
* Performing the regular duties of a police officer
* Coordinating and staffing special events
* Traffic direction and control
* Providing service to the public in a professional manner
* Providing presentations to civic or student groups
* Operating a motorcycle in all types of weather
* Responding to emergencies during non-regularly scheduled hours
* Other duties as assigned by their supervisor
Motor Officers are expected to work in all types of weather conditions on a motorcycle. Work hours are variable and may change on short notice. Motor officers are constantly in contact with the public and are expected to manage conflict situations without generating complaints. Selected officers must always maintain a positive and professional image.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
* High School Diploma or GED
* One year of work experience involving public contact under varying circumstances or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
* Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence
* Must meet the minimum age and medical standards established by the Human Resources Department
* Good character and background are essential requirements
* Must have a valid DCJS Motor Certification
* Must be DCJS certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in Virginia
* Applicants must possess a current Class M motorcycle license
Preferred Qualifications
Four-year college Degree or equivalent directly related work experience.

* Strong ethics and morals that are consistent with departmental directives, rules, and regulations

* Willingness to work flexible hours and adjust days off
* The capability and commitment to being a team player
* Formal training in traffic-related matters
* Demonstrate above-average driving history and driving skills
Necessary Documentation
* High School Diploma or Certified High School transcripts or GED
* College Degree or Certified transcripts from your College or University (if applicable)
* Valid Driver's License (must be the state in which you presently reside)
* Social Security Card
* Proof of US citizenship (Birth Certificate or Naturalization Paperwork or U.S. Passport)
* DD Form 214 (Long form) if applicable (military discharge paperwork)
* Certified transcript of your driving record
* Depending on your state, a 5 or 7-year history is needed. If you resided in and obtained a driving permit in 2 or more different states during a 7-year period, we will need both certified transcripts and name change documents (if applicable).
Position Requirements
This position requires the successful completion of:
* Applicants are required to provide proof of their current Class M motorcycle license.
* Completion of the Motors Assessment process
* Background Questionnaire
* Background Investigation (including credit check)
* Driver's License Check
* Polygraph Examination
* Senior Panel Interview, Police Chief Interview
* Psychological Examination
* Medical Examination
* Drug Screen
No weapons (which include law enforcement officers from other jurisdictions) nor electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, palm pilots, etc.) will be permitted in the building.

Motors Assessment
Applicants must demonstrate their ability to control and maneuver a motorcycle.
In-house Motor Assessment exercise:
The practical exercise will be conducted at a time and place to be announced. The practical exercise will utilize the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Police model motorcycle (FLHTP) and the BMW R1250 RT Police model motorcycle. All applicants will be afforded the opportunity to practice on the police motorcycle for 20 minutes before the practical skills exercise is conducted. The inability to complete all segments of the practical exercise will result in the candidate's exclusion from the remainder of the selection process.

If the following conditions are not met within 18 months of entering the Motors unit, the candidate will be transferred to another assignment at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
* Successfully complete an in-house motorcycle training
* Successfully complete an in-house field training program for motor officers (this is in addition to the full Officer FTO program)
The officer(s) selected serve in the unit at the pleasure of the Chief of Police. As noted in Police Directive 4.11, the Chief of Police reserves the right to transfer any employee in a manner consistent with the needs of the Department.
The officer(s) selected for assignment to Motors Officer will serve a 12-month probationary period to determine whether the candidate is suitable for this position. After the 12-month probationary period, continued satisfactory performance is required to remain in the Motors unit.
