PARAEDUCATOR - IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION
BRIEN MCMAHON HIGH SCHOOL
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the building administrator, the In-School Suspension Paraeducator supports students to participate in their educational program. In-School Suspension Paraeducator will work in collaboration with building administrators, counselors, teachers, and support staff to offer support to students who are placed in In-School Suspension.
Essential Functions:
* Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations and directives
* Follow Norwalk school policy to ensure student safety
* Follow teacher's oral or written directions with accuracy
* Assist the teacher with the implementation of classroom instructional goals and Section 504 plans
* Assist students with classwork individually or in small groups
* Maintain student records of attendance in ISS
* Assist the teacher with documentation of student progress
* Receive student work from teachers and ensure completion of student work
* Encourage students to interact appropriately with peers
* Assist students during recess, breaks, emergency drills, assemblies
* Assist and support students to use computers, iPads or other media to access curriculum
* Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
* Engage students; Support students to complete assignments assigned by teachers
* Contact teachers to ensure assignments are given to students for time in In-School Suspension
* Problem solving and deescalating issues with students in the In-School Suspension room.
* Facilitate school related conversations between students assigned to the In-School Suspension room.
* Maintain daily report/log of work completed by each student
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
* Interact in a positive manner with all staff, students, parents and visitors
* Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
* Maintain a level of approachability by administration, staff, parents and visitors
* Respond to questions and requests in a timely and appropriate manner
* Attend meetings and professional development activities as recommended by Principal
* Perform other related duties as assigned by Principal
Qualifications/Certificates:
* High school diploma or equivalency and ParaPro Certificate
* Bachelor's Degree, preferred
* Associate's Degree in education or related field, or ParaPro Certificate, or two (2) years of college
* Two (2) years of experience working with children or young adults in a school setting, preferred
* Language fluency in a second language preferred
* Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate

* Ability to record data with accuracy
* Ability to work effectively with others
* Ability to implement teacher directives related to instructional and behavioral goals effectively

Additional Working Conditions:
* Repetitive hand motion, e.g., computer keyboard, typing, calculator, writing
* The regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, read, hear, see, speak, reach, crouch, climb and stoop
* Periodic interruption of duties by staff, students, visitors, intercom and/or telephone
* Occasional requirement to lift, carry, push and/or pull various supplies and/or equipment up to a maximum of 10 pounds
Days: Monday - Friday (30-37.5 hours weekly)
Salary: In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement
Bargaining Unit: NFEP
Work Year: August - June (10 Months/40 weeks)
