POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS SUMMARY OF DUTIES:This classification is a first-level employee that will be responsible for performing billing for Advance Life Support transport claims and necessary follow-up with Medicare, Medicaid, primary and secondary insurance companies, and private payers to ensure claim accuracy. This classification will have broad knowledge of all federal and state regulations applying to each individual insurance carrier. Employees in this classification must be able to understand and apply appropriate ICD-10 codes, medical terminology and human anatomy for billing purposes.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*Position Specific SummaryThe Ambulance Billing Specialist I position at the City of Tucson's Fire Department is responsible for performing a wide range of ambulance billing duties including the prebilling and coding of medical claims, conducting follow-up with insurance companies, patients, and other third parties, and monitoring and resolving accounts using department established procedures.Work is performed under the supervision of the Management Assistant. This position does not supervise. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts billing procedures including demographics and insurance verification, assigns applicable diagnosis and procedure codes, and conducts additional follow-up as needed.
  • Reconciles data reported on Patient Care Reports with dispatch information. Refers reports to proper channels for corrections or follow-up.
  • Receives incoming calls to accept payments, make payment arrangements based on time frame parameters and patient ability to reimburse, process inquiries from attorneys, patients, and insurance companies. Assists with appealing insurance claims.
  • Follows up on accounts that need further actions to secure reimbursement, processes Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) signature forms and returned mail.
  • Preforms other duties and tasks as assigned.
