Job DescriptionECU HealthAbout The Outer Banks HospitalThe Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.OBH is fully accredited, provides high quality care in a compassionate environment to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay, and has been nationally recognized for outstanding patient care.Position SummaryThe Ambulatory Care Technician is responsible for handling administrative tasks and performs diverse duties for the Emergency Department. Also provides specific basic nursing care to patients, under direct supervision of the nursing staff and director.ResponsibilitiesFollows departmental guidelines for absences and tardiness. Complies with allotted break and meal times. Is flexible with and participates collaboratively with unit scheduling. Resolves staffing conflicts readily. Participates in temporary assignment measures of department. Attends at least 75% of unit staff meetings, and mandatory unit or hospital based in-services. Participates in elective education offerings. Is an active participant in unit and/or hospital based communities.Practices collaboratively with colleagues and others members of healthcare team. Shift reports and communications are timely, pertinent and accurate. Is aware of standard of practice for profession or specialty and integrates such into daily practice. Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice. Greets and directs patients, visitors and staff in courteous manner.Follow established infection control/stand precautions policies and procedures. Responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Can order and obtain other supplies as needed by unit. Will proactively seek out knowledge of how to order and obtain. Can use phone system appropriately. Maintains orderly and hazard free work area (secretary station, nursing stations, kitchen, lounge, storage areas, hallways). Can promptly and accurately order lab work, radiology procedures, cardiopulmonary, consults and dietary orders utilizing Healthspan system.Can identify patients in need of and obtain 12 lead EKG promptly (less than 10 minutes). Accurately prepares and transports specimens to the lab in a timely manner. Maintains unit logs in timely and accurate manner. Accurately assembles new charts/chart packs as needed. Breaks down discharge/old charts accurately and in timely fashion. Keeps all rooms within the department stocked with appropriate levels of supplies as determined by the department director. Performs quality control daily check for Glucometer. Collects, reports and documents data (i.e. vital signs, height, weight). Intake and output in a timely and accurate fashion, including the acquisition and documentation of orthostatic vitals.Performs technical skills and comfort measures that provide for the patients plan of care and personal hygiene (i.e. feeding, bathing, elimination assist, incontinence skin care, wound care, splinting, assistance with suturing, heat and cold treatment) as delegated by the Registered Nurse. Assists with admission, discharge, and transfers of patients as directed by the RN. Escorts, ambulates, positions and turns patients as delegated by RN. Assists with patient safety related to age and condition. Assists with patient specific safety precautions. Collects, reports, and documents data related to patient safety. Answers call lights and reports to the POC RN any patient needs that require intervention and/or documentation beyond the scope of the ACT. Provides and maintains a clean, safe environment and performs and/or assists others to perform proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures and infection control measure. Prepares and assists patient during examination, procedures and treatments, assists MD and RN with such as needed.Minimum RequirementsMust have High School Diploma or equivalent, successful completion of EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, or EMT-Paramedic program in the state of North Carolina, and carrying a current certification. Also required to have a current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status upon hire and encouraged to have an AHA PEARS certification (PALS, ENPC or NALS may be substituted for PEARS for EMT-Intermediates and Paramedics).Knowledge of computer and other office equipment required. Ability to manage numerous projects and set priorities. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
