Job Description:

AmeriCorps at the Excellence Project

New York Edge will place 2 full-time AmeriCorps Service Members at each of 5 public schools in the Bronx as Instructors and/or Mentors in The Excellence Project (TEP), an after-school and summer program serving under-resourced gifted students. At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will help at least 80% of students improve their academic engagement and social-emotional skills, and improve their academic performance. ACSMs will serve in the role of Instructor and Mentor; one of each will be placed at each school. Full-time service will enable ACSMs to fill important curriculum development, activity preparation, and support roles, in addition to providing youth-facing service after school, and it will enable them to serve full-time during daylong programming in the summer. In addition to providing the services mentioned above, full-time ACSM Instructors will review classroom and curriculum data, topics, and assignments; grade assignments aligned to rubrics; and plan and prepare lesson plans. Full-time ACSM Mentors will develop and maintain relationships with students and parents throughout their service year. They will conduct weekly parent outreach; assess students to ensure they are progressing academically, socially, and emotionally; develop interventions as needed; observe students in class during the school day; and mentor and coach participants and colleagues. The full-time role will allow NYE to provide ACSMs with ongoing professional development, which will better prepare ACSMs for educational careers after their service year ends. It will also enable ACSMs to research academic, social-emotional learning, arts, sports, and wellness best practices--and implement those practices.
