The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for anAnalyst, Energy Strategy I - Senior, located in Lansing, MI.Job Type: Full-TimeStarting Salary Range: Analyst I $66,927. - $79,643. / Analyst II $82,628. - $99,938 / Analyst III $91,746. - $111,930.Position Summary:The role of Analyst, Energy Strategy is part of a team conducting energy planning activities. The department is responsible for forecasting, integrated resource planning, procurement, research, and internal support related to energy strategy. The department maintains the BWL's Production Cost Model and Capacity Expansion model for electric generation planning. Reports to the Manager of Strategy & Planning.Essential Functions:
  • Forecasts electric retail sales and peak load for short- and long-term requirements.
  • Collects data and maintains Production Cost Model for electric generation studies.
  • Provides wholesale sales and revenue, generation, fuel, purchased power, and emissions forecast to internal stakeholders.
  • Collects data and maintains Capacity Expansion Model for integrated resource plans and other long-term electric studies.
  • Facilitates integrated resource planning process, including gathering input from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conducts studies and analyses of the electric resource portfolio.
  • Oversees Request for Proposal processes for energy resources.
  • Partners with finance, legal, and operations to negotiate, execute, and maintain energy purchases, including Power Purchase Agreements.
  • Supports internal partners with expertise in energy markets, strategy, and analysis to aid decision-making.
  • Develops consistent internal reporting related to energy forecasts and actual results, including P&L statements for production facilities.
  • Provides input into Master Planning activities related to electric supply and demand resources.
  • Research and reports on new technologies, industry news and trends, and other regulatory or policy news related to energy planning to assist decision-making.
  • Prepares and presents formal reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications: Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, finance, business, economics, data analytics, science, mathematics, statistics, environment, or equivalent with relevant coursework.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite, including Power BI, Outlook, Teams, advanced Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of energy technologies, their capabilities, and risk and opportunities of each.
Additional Requirements based on level:Analyst I $66,927. - $79,643.Required:
  • Typically, 1-3 years of experience in an energy role. Will consider the depth and breadth of experience.
Preferred:
  • Understanding fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of statistical analysis and energy resource planning.
  • Prior experience using Production Cost Models or Capacity Expansion Models for electric planning.
  • Ability to present and defend reports and findings before a panel of experts.
Analyst II $82,628. - $99,938Required:
  • Includes all level requirement above.
  • Typically, five years of experience in an energy role. Will consider the depth and breadth of experience.
  • Detailed understanding of energy technologies, their capabilities, and risk and opportunities of each.
  • Understanding fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of statistical analysis and energy resource
Preferred:
  • Prior experience using Production Cost Models or Capacity Expansion Models for electric planning.
  • Ability to present and defend reports and findings before a panel of experts.
Senior Analyst $91,746. - $111,930. Required:
  • Includes all level requirement above.
  • Typically, seven years of experience in an energy role. Will consider the depth and breadth of experience.
  • Understanding fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of statistical analysis and energy resource planning.
