Description Leidos Defense Systems, is seeking a talented Analytical Research Scientist to join a diverse team to create unique solutions for complex problems. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber and commercial fields, Leidos-Dynetics provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific and IT solutions. Primary Responsibilities The Analytical Research Scientist will be responsible for leading and participating in research and development tasks in support of a variety of programs. Tasks will include developing new theories, creating methods, conducting tests, recording and interpreting data, and presenting results to individuals both internal and external to the programs. The position will have responsibility for task leadership of a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to design, build, and evaluate advanced systems. Additionally, this role will require development of materials analysis techniques to prepare and analyze a range of samples across multiple programs. This position requires a flexible individual willing to perform other supporting tasks as needed. This role will support programs involving a range of diverse technology areas such as developmental material production, electronics, power generation, structures, thermal protection, and system integration. The role will require effective collaboration with a diverse group of team members - internal, subcontractors and customers - some of whom are geographically dispersed. Basic Qualifications
  • Candidate must have a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or one of the Physical Sciences
  • Candidates must have a strong technical background in analytical chemistry and/or materials analysis with at least 4+ years of demonstrated experience
  • Candidates must have a demonstrated background with 1 or more of the following analysis techniques: ICP-MS, ICP-OES, SEM, TGA, TMA, XPS, XRD
  • Candidates must be highly organized and have a great attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written skills along with a solid practical knowledge of data analysis and interpretation of results
  • Strong background in diagnosing and resolving problems within multiple technical domains
  • Candidate must be self-motivated and be capable of functioning effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • The candidate should have experience in the following areas:
    • Developing experimental procedures and documenting standard operating procedures
    • Experience handling hazardous materials
    • Sample preparation and testing of various organic and inorganic compounds
    • Proven experience managing to and meeting accelerated schedules
    • Effective Communication and presentation of results to multiple functional disciplines
    • Proficiency independently working on sensitive programs
    • Experience working with custom hardware built for non-standard applications
    • Understand the principals of thermodynamics, gas flow dynamics, chemical compatibility
    • Experience preparing technical and scientific reports
    • Knowledge and implementation of laboratory safety requirements
    • Experience independently coordinating and executing tasks in support of multiple programs
    • Proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and possess (and be able to maintain) a Final DOE Q Clearance or meet the eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a DOE Q Clearance.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • BS and 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Preference will be shown to candidates holding an active DOE Q clearance
  • Demonstrated experience working within multiple technical domains
  • Experience with a laboratory information management software (LIMS) system and/or ISO 17025 quality guidelines
  • Preference will be shown to candidates with direct experience developing analytical methodology for, and testing of, a variety of materials (metals, ceramics, etc.)
