Animal Care Specialist

Responsibilities

• Purpose-bred laboratory mice care (husbandry), health monitoring, feeding, recording daily activities, providing general facility maintenance and cleanliness, and operation of various types of facility machinery including, but not limited to, isoflurane machine, irradiator, ventilated racks, and experience with Innovive caging is preferred
• Perform daily vivarium room and animal checks
• Clean and sanitize animal rooms, walls, procedure room, changing room, and other support areas
• Provide clean, sterile (where applicable) supplies and equipment to research staffs
• Maintain all logs, room records, mouse inventory database
• Familiarity with regulations/guidelines/policies to ensure that mice are provided appropriate care to promote physical and psychological well-being and minimize discomfort
• Recognize and observe mice for clinical signs of illness/disease/distress/behavioral changes, assess environmental conditions, and report issues/deviations promptly
• Receive mice orders and house mice appropriately
• Receive and maintain feed, bedding, PPE, and storeroom and procedure room supplies
• Assist in environmental monitoring and validation of equipment and sanitation methods
• Perform animal euthanasia and dispose of dead animals/biowaste according to company/regulatory guidelines

Qualifications

• Proficiency in the use of computers for record-keeping and data collection
• AA/AS is preferable; High school degree, GED, or equivalent is required
• AALAS certification at a minimum of LAT required
• LATg is preferred
• At least one year prior experience working in a laboratory mice research setting with rodents is required
• Solid written and verbal communication skills, keen attention to detail and the ability to diligently record and maintain laboratory records are crucial
• Must be able to life a minimum of 50 lbs
