Salary: $3,042.00 Monthly Location : San Antonio, TX Job Type: Full-time Regular Job Number: 2024-01399 Department: Environmental Services Opening Date: 09/13/2024 Closing Date: 12/31/2024 11:59 PM Central Summary Under general supervision, is responsible for performing the cleaning, maintenance, and sanitizing of kennels and associated equipment. Ensures food and water are provided to animals, along with walking, exercising healthy and ambulatory animals. Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleans and sanitizes treatment room, kennel area, and equipment to include all runs, cages, walls, doors, and floors; cleans play yard areas throughout the day
- Feeds and waters all animals; monitors food intake and animal waste and reports changes to Animal Shelter Manager
- Demonstrates excellent customer relations with internal and external customers
- Vaccinates, medicates, and preps animals for surgery; creates and maintains scheduling for medicating animals as required
- Follows schedule to ensure animals are exercised daily
- Monitors behavior and characteristics of animals and notifies the Animal Shelter Manager or the Veterinary Personnel on duty of any changes immediately
- Washes, dries and folds all laundry and maintains an orderly laundry room; cleans all dishes, toys, and litter pans used by animals
- Monitors and maintains inventory of animals, equipment, cleaning supplies, restroom supplies, animal food, and litter
- Creates and maintains animal profile information in shelter software; records and completes screening of animals for current disposition and updates animal profiles
- Helps in the adoption of animals, provides information to owners (lost animals), and works with transferred animals
- Performs related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate and one (1) year experience working or volunteering in an animal shelter/kennel; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of animal care and feeding procedures; knowledge of humane animal handling and housing; knowledge of recognizing and interpreting animal signals
- Basic skill in operating a computer and office equipment; skill in customer service
- Ability to work in an efficient manner with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities; ability to learn procedures related to sanitizing kennels, equipment, and general animal handling and to communicate clearly and effectively; ability to learn and use shelter software; ability to learn safety protocols and procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside organizations and the general public
- Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license, Class C or higher
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
- Constantly working in outdoor conditions with exposure to temperature variations, and varied weather conditions
- Exposure to insects, insect and animal bites, flammable liquids, cramped work areas, dust, damp/wet/dirty surfaces, poisonous plants, oily surfaces, high noise areas, chemical and biological irritants, noxious odors and fumes sometimes requiring the use of protective equipment and breathing apparatus

- Frequently moves items weighing up to 10-60 pounds
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 60-100 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
