Ensures food and water are provided to animals, along with walking, exercising healthy and ambulatory animals. Duties and Responsibilities Cleans and sanitizes treatment room, kennel area, and equipment to include all runs, cages, walls, doors, and floors; cleans play yard areas throughout the dayFeeds and waters all animals; monitors food intake and animal waste and reports changes to Animal Shelter ManagerDemonstrates excellent customer relations with internal and external customersVaccinates, medicates, and preps animals for surgery; creates and maintains scheduling for medicating animals as requiredFollows schedule to ensure animals are exercised dailyMonitors behavior and characteristics of animals and notifies the Animal Shelter Manager or the Veterinary Personnel on duty of any changes immediatelyWashes, dries and folds all laundry and maintains an orderly laundry room; cleans all dishes, toys, and litter pans used by animalsMonitors and maintains inventory of animals, equipment, cleaning supplies, restroom supplies, animal food, and litterCreates and maintains animal profile information in shelter software; records and completes screening of animals for current disposition and updates animal profilesHelps in the adoption of animals, provides information to owners (lost animals), and works with transferred animalsPerforms related duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate and one (1) year experience working or volunteering in an animal shelter/kennel; or an equivalent combination of education and experienceKnowledge of animal care and feeding procedures; knowledge of humane animal handling and housing; knowledge of recognizing and interpreting animal signalsBasic skill in operating a computer and office equipment; skill in customer serviceAbility to work in an efficient manner with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities; ability to learn procedures related to sanitizing kennels, equipment, and general animal handling and to communicate clearly and effectively; ability to learn and use shelter software; ability to learn safety protocols and procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside organizations and the general publicMust possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license, Class C or higherMust secure and maintain a favorable background investigationMust clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen testMay be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweekWorking Environment and Physical Demands:Constantly working in outdoor conditions with exposure to temperature variations, and varied weather conditionsExposure to insects, insect and animal bites, flammable liquids, cramped work areas, dust, damp/wet/dirty surfaces, poisonous plants, oily surfaces, high noise areas, chemical and biological irritants, noxious odors and fumes sometimes requiring the use of protective equipment and breathing apparatusExposure to animals of unknown temperament and backgroundFrequently moves items weighing up to 10-60 poundsOccasionally moves items weighing up to 60-100 poundsOccasionally moves about the officeFrequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate informationConstantly operates a computer and other office productivity machineryPositions self to perform essential functionsMust be able to remain in a stationary positionMust be able to perform all physical requirements of the position Supplemental InformationWorkstations with internet access are available, if needed, to view job postings and apply online at 211 S Flores, San Antonio, TX 78204, 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday.
