Job Title: Animal Care Technician (Supporting Cancer Research) Job Description- Assists with daily operations and care of animals. Ensures and maintains established standards of practice and operational efficiency. Serves as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, and pre- and post-procedural care or sanitation services. Perform a variety of skilled animal husbandry duties and specialized services for animals and animal colonies, including properly housing animals, performing various procedures and skilled observation of animal conditions. Maintain general sanitation procedures as required. •Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and stress and deviations in animal conditions. •Feed, house, and handle animals in accordance with institutional, local, and Federal regulations. •Perform animal care with veterinary oversight which may include specialized drug administration, sample collection, and pre- and post-procedural care. •Maintain records of treatments. •Provide husbandry and specialized services for animals in animal colonies. •Maintain, sanitize, and decontaminate animal rooms and facilities within low to moderate hazardous areas, e.g. BL2. •Perform rodent euthanasia services according to established standards and practices and/or assist in non-rodent species euthanasia. •Maintain required records according to institutional, local, and federal regulatory standards. •Serve as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, and pre- and post-procedural care or sanitation services. •May train and/or instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint, and care techniques appropriate to the level. •Perform periodic decontamination, maintenance, and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers. •Operate animal care processing equipment on either clean or dirty side and/or specific washing center; diagnose mechanical, technical, and/or process problems. •Maintain inventory of supplies. •May act as a driver; operating vehicle in order to pick up and deliver animals and materials to assignment locations, applying properanimal handling and care protocols. •Perform additional related tasks as necessary. - College degree or 4 years of work experience
Work Site- This is a fully on-site position in New Haven, Connecticut. Work Environment 12 Week Training Program •Management/Training staff will ensure candidate receives proper training for the position through constructive communication during training and transparent documentation on progress. Work Schedule: •During training: Monday - Friday 7:00 - 3:00 (flexible) •Once off training: Friday - Tuesday 7:00-3:00 or 8:00-4:00 o Staff are paid an hourly 10% shift differential increase for Saturdays and Sundays because of the double weekend schedule. Appointed Holidays: All staff are required to work appointed holidays. o Holidays are typically 4-5 hours Recess Days: All staff are required to work recess days. o Friday after Thanksgiving o 5 Business Days between Christmas and New Year's Day o Recess Days are a full workday o Staff are paid straight pay for the entire day and given floating holiday time for hours physically worked. Attendance: You are considered an essential service provider. Therefore, maintaining a good attendance record and reporting to work on time, when scheduled, even during inclement weather and holiday/recess days, is a condition of employment. PPE is Gloves and Gown only.
