Job Title: Animal Care TechnicianJob DescriptionWe are seeking a dedicated Animal Care Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the care and well-being of laboratory animals, ensuring they are fed, watered, and housed in a clean and sanitary environment. Additionally, the role involves performing routine physical examinations, laboratory tests, and special handling techniques for researchers, among other duties.
Responsibilities- Feed and water animals.
- Clean and sanitize cages, animal rooms, and related environments as necessary.
- Perform routine physical examinations and laboratory tests.
- Assist with special handling techniques for researchers as required.
- Assess the status of animal shipments, including identity, number of individuals, weight, health, etc.
- Administer medications and give injections under supervision.
- Identify animals by sex, species, or strain.
- Provide support during surgical and experimental procedures.
- Observe and collect data on animal facilities' operations for accurate reports and required records.
- Report findings to appropriate department staff.
- Breed and wean animals as needed.
- Perform related duties as required.
Essential Skills- Knowledge of animal care requirements, including animal facilities and husbandry regulations.
- Basic understanding of animal disease problems and prevention techniques.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Proficiency in utilizing computer software.
- Manual dexterity and physical ability sufficient for handling animals, feeds, supplies, and equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of animal care experience directly related to the maintenance of the health and well-being of laboratory animals.
- Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the level of Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (can substitute for general experience).
- Two years of animal care experience directly related to the maintenance of the health and well-being of laboratory animals.
- A college degree of two or more years and one-half year of animal care experience directly related to the maintenance of the health and well-being of laboratory animals.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment is a laboratory setting. This role requires adherence to strict hygiene and sanitation protocols to ensure the health and safety of the animals. The technician will work closely with researchers and other staff in a collaborative and supportive environment.
